New awards

The current ones looked crooked with the white matte so I decided to fix them, and also create a few new ones for other achievements since there was a discussion way back to create new awards and how to decide on them.

(.gif versions are just as smooth, to be posted to an admin if the idea goes through)

Here are the things I thought should be awarded:

Activity Award
Same as before, highest "activity" bar in vBexperience gets it.
Helpful Award
Same as before, manually given out by admin/moderators.*
Referrer Award
Highest number of referrals gets it automatically.
Intelligence Award
Highest number of valid reported posts gets it (only after first to report).
Announcer Award
Highest number of articles (that actually made it front page) gets it (except Jon ).
Shopper Award
Most spent in the shops.

The above things can't be spammed for without some kind of benefit for the site or an obvious tell, which is one of the reasons I chose them. The other reason is that they're such that could be passed on to someone else relatively quickly, avoiding the medal getting stuck at someone, and this way giving everyone a little incentive to contribute to the site/community. Colour correspondencies would be negotiated in this thread.

Here are a few others to think about, but these can be spammed for:
Posting Award, Tagger Award, Visitor Award, Voter Award, Helpful Award*

*Depends on whether the helpful award is given automatically, after number of 'thanks', or manually, after moderator judgement - but seeing as how there are 9 medals, we could have 1 after 'thanks' and 1 given manually for contributions other than posts.

This is a thread dedicated to discussing how we could make this vBexperience add-on more fun with such awards.

ps Jon or LK, please fix the vBexperience points because currently it says minerals

 

These are good ideas, good job vasz.

Now, the shopper award, and the posting award, I get the feeling, that the same person will have those.

Announcer award, will probably go to LT.

Would visitor one be for for profile views, or thread views, or both? If not both, then there could be one for each.

Tagger one though, I don't think is a good idea, cause there are a lot of spam tags already in place. Unless you made Space Junk tags not count.

Either way, good ideas vaszy.

 

Award for profile visits? Wouldn't Kurai keep that one?

 

Yea, she probably would, with almost 10k visits. I'm up there pretty high pushing 7.

 

Visitor award as in who posts the most number of visitor messages, since there's a record for it in the add-on.

There could be an award for most number of thread views, which I hadn't considered. However, that too would need to exclude Jon for it to have any point.

 

Well, that is sort of a given.

You'll probably have to buy a few shirts for him to agree to not be included though.

 

the medals are not very destinct from one another other then a slight color fade.. i wouldnt know who had what.

@ Tink, the image would have a little popup saying which award it is.

 

Tink is right, you could make maybe 3-5 different medals out of those to have them distinct enough from each other.
It's 21st century after all, we shouldn't need to be literate!

 

They look more similar than they actually are because of being next to each other, especially for my grouping them together - I think the colours are fine. I had thought about making them more distinct, but came to the conclusion that since anything else on them would need to stand out from the medal and hence would need to be dark grey or black, it would darken the overall image too much. But I came up with two options with which I will play around:

• Some could do with patterns on the top half, and maybe others on the bottom half.

• Have similar style symbols on the bottom half of all the medals. Diablo runes, chinese characters, whatever.

I will see which one looks good and might post results, but only if there's a riot about the colours being too similar

 

Kuvasz if you make the icons and we get some good disscussion going I have no problem editing the old awards and adding some new ones.

As for the tagger award I really like the idea and know Jon would as well because thread tags are one of the ways we get noticed because of how google/yahoo bots interact with our threads.

 

I guess tagging award would stop me from being able to leave my trademark 'overmind is the best'?

Maybe add small engraving style images to them to help make them instantly distinguishable, like a handshake for the helpful award, nothing elaborate just something small to recognise them by (even with the awards now i don't know what's what without running the mouse over them).

I tried a few symbols but anything remotely complex (i.e., more than 1 line) looked like squished insects. Also I think the medals look fine as they are. I'll try and add a poll so people can easily express their feelings about the currently proposed medals.

 

You shouldn't be doing that anyways.

More award would be nice, but what about having different award styles, like different shaped medals and different color ribbons with stripes and such.

Also, I think we should have Starcraft themed icons as the awards.

 

Going by what BoP said I created a few new ones to see how they're greeted.


1. Referrer award.
2. Posting award. If we use ppd values the award should be able to move freely.
3. Tagger award. I'm not sure if this can be implemented though.
4. Vigilance award (because intelligence could have dodgy interpretations).
5. Activity award, for "always sticking around".
6. Helpful award. Pretty straightforward I think.
7. Announcer award.

Thoughts? Or something... we'll never get anywhere at this pace

I never said they were. I meant BoP saying having totally different symbols. Exactly how would SC themed awards look like?

 

Small portraits of units. Like say, a High Templar for the Helpful award.

Very much so.

I don't think any SC icon or theme would suit such every-day awards anyway.
