Hey i am new to starcraft and was wondering if you have play between two computers without internet???
You definetely can...I played this way, last evening; all you need is a Local Area Network (LAN), which can be done using cable or wireless network cards. In both cases..the computers need to be aproximately close to each other...not more than 100 meters...anyway...the exact distance depends on multiple tehnical specifications. As for the game itself....it gives specific instructions in order to be able to create the game! You should choose Local Area Conection (LAN)....or UDP (i can't remember what it comes from); these options can be found in the multiplayer section, in the Broodwar game, patched with 1.15 version. Also...if you want to play between comps at higher distance, you coul use "modem", an option also located in the multiplayer section, provided that you have a modem attached to your computer...and so does the other computer. The game will be played through the phone line, dialing a destination number; also it is worth mentioning that it will probably imply some costs because you use the phone line.
Types: Battle.net - connects over the Internet. Latency is an issue, and the two games must be with two different CD-Keys. Requires latest version. Local networks only require all copies to be the SAME version. Local Area Connection (LAN) (IPX) - No idea, some different connection. Modem - No idea, look up. Direct Cable Connection - only use when two computers are directly connected with network cables and/or extensions and those 3-sided things (LOL) Local Area Network (UDP) - the preferred way, use with a router, but a direct cable connection can also use this, I believe. EDIT: And yeah, overmind, you should change your sig, and your pic. Its CHINESE NEW YEAR'S and VALENTINE'S DAY and FAMILY DAY (only in Ontario!) next.
But i like my freaking sweet hat! I'd have to say LAN seems like the easiest, although i've never done played mutliplayer without the internet myself.
thanks for all the quick impute!!! The computers are 2 feet away at the moment!!! so that won't be a problem!! I will have to try this soon because me and my friend are dieing to fight each other!!!
BTW, generally, use Local Area Network (UDP). It's much more reliable. And if your friend has a computer, give him a copy of StarCraft and get iCCup if you guys are sharing CD-Keys.
He never said he didn't have internet, he just said what he could do without it. And, technically, local IS internet.
I am having a hard time making the direct connection work! when ever i try and start game it won't show up on the other computer! any suggestions
What type of LAN did you select? IPX or UDP? Are you using a straight-through ethernet connection or a cross-over?
