If I wanna move an army from 1 side of the map to another for example,
is there any way to do this so the units stick together.

Like the helions arrive at the same time as the infantry and the thor's

    thanks

    A. use Medivacs to transport the slower units.

    B. Move your attack force across the map in smaller increments, allowing them to keep together while they move.

    C. Move your slower units out first to give them a head start, so they arrive at the enemy base around the same time as your faster units.

I guess there's no formation button then?
Some games I've played there's a formation button, and the units move
    in the same formation.

are you hotkeying? CTRL+number groups selected units, then if you want to give them all the same command you simply hit the hotkey and right click to move for exmaple.

No, there's no formation on sc. You have to control your units yourself. And tbh auto-formations would kinda suck as the only thing they do is slow fast units and make your army look pretty while forcing you to enter the fray in a set way(while you might wanna say the units that are by default on the back to the front as cannon fodder). A maintain-your-distance type of formation button could possibly work but it wouldn't feel starcraft-y and imo the majority of players wouldn't like it(myself included).

What I like to do is make the faster units follow the slower ones by right-clicking on them. I even believe that the faster units following will attack-move once enemies are encountered.

That can happen. The units behind the ones moving will simply move, not attack-move. But, since the units in the front are attack-moving, they will stand still to attack when they encounter an enemy, so the units following them will also join the fray as they are paused to a halt. Some will remain behind though and at any rate it's best to control your fights and not just send stuff over and watch the results as the results might not end up pleasing most of the time(standing in psi storm, not focusing fire on stuff that kills you faster than others, not using your units' abilities are stuff that actually govern the outcome of a fight to a huge degree).

Is it at any time better to attack move with ranged units when engaging? Or should that only be done with melees like lings?

With units linke lings and other melee try to surround your target so that all units are attacking. Unless you only wanna use your melee as a meat wall for your ranged, then attack move and move your ranged closer to get more shots without having to move again.
