I was walking into the bathroom minding my own business, turned on the light and something dark scampered across the floor O.O now the thing that really startled me was not the relatively large size (I'm used to small bugs), it was the sound. And that I was really elsewhere in spirit. And the "best" thing was that as it hid in a crack (yeah, kind of an old house...) it came back out and looked at me :D as it was running I first thought it was a cockroach but it was too big and loud (heavy) for that, so I thought it was a bat as it was very hot today, open windows, etc. but then concluded that bats aren't exactly the best sprinters so it has to be a mouse.

So now I need to find a way to trap it and throw it out. Alive. Does any of you have any tricks/home-made traps that you could share?

Interestingly enough the neighbouring house which has been empty for at least 2 years (owner deceased) was demolished less than a week ago... infestation inbound?

    Anyway. Adrenalin surge ftw :D

Do as I did: nothing and wait until the mice are so fat and lazy that you can actually just pick them up and throw them out of the window(okay, I can do that in theory, those things are freaking slow)

Box, ruler, string, cheese, wait, pull string (attached to ruler), box falls down catching the 'thing'.

Alternatively, try to talk into him.

    I found this.

I suppose you could rig the bottle to fall onto its base when the mouse walks in to get the bait. If that fails, you could always go for the tried and true box-on-a-stick trap.

i was going to suggest something, but then you said you wanted it alive, so heres another. Place a generous amount of bird seed in the middle of the floor under a shoebox, then you wait.

Crumbs (crackers or - yes, this is true - hard cheese) and flypaper.

Make sure the flypaper is stuck to the ground.

That's the equivalent of starving it to death or offering it for a meal as I probably wouldn't be able to get it off, yes?

As for the other suggestions, I had in mind something that works automatically... without wanting to sound harsh and making this issue sound trivial when it's not, I have other things to do : |

And Kaaraa, I don't get the idea behind that trap... is it so it gets fat from eating and doesn't fit back out lol?

Well when it gets caught on the paper, you take it outside and let it go!

I think the image I linked is a small, one-way trap door. it allows the mouse to push the door open by going inside the bottle, but trying to go back outside only pushes the door closed, trapping the mouse inside.

Stop eating and storing food indoors.

Or get a cat. Sure, the mouse will "die" but his spirit or midichlorians or some BS will go on in the cat. There's a chance the cat won't even kill the mouse for awhile so it can play with it. Gives you a chance to catch it after the cat has brought it out into the open.
    Bonus: Kitty.

So after checking out a few home made traps and establishing the principle I made my own one - a sawn off bottle on the edge of a bowl and the crack, and some crackers in the end of it, bottles full of concentrate etc. in the bowl to keep the sawn off bottle in place once it's tipped upright. It should work but the mouse seems to eat extremely rarely and hasn't triggered the trap yet. I have until the 10th to get rid of it, so fingers crossed.

why do you only have to the 10th to get rid of it?

I can't guarantee its safety after that as the owner of the place comes home for 2 weeks, and he's not fond of animals, let alone rodents.

I've seen that in several places but the problem is that I can't work with a tabletop as it quite possibly never goes in the kitchen, let alonr onto the table. But I'm using this principle in a slightly different manner. Doesn't seem to work though :D
