I know it really isn't new news that he isn't Jim's voice this time around, but this article is still a good read.

To be honest, I just learned today about the whole decision to not have him as Jim's voice. Was kind of startling....

  5. Jim Raynor is a pretty different character from what I've seen. The voice acting change may be needed and justified.

    Thank..... God!

I seriously don't know how so many people liked Raynor from StarCraft1. He was an absolute prat. His voice, his quotes and his face.... Eugh. How the **** is he so popular? Every mission he was in I just wanted him to die. Meanwhile everyone goes around killing all the awesome heroes, like Tassadar and Fenix, in fact twice in Fenix's case, while he just sits there rattling off some crap and trying to act all macho. He's honestly the absolute worst hero in the game. Seriously, I can't bring another hero to mind that sucks more than he does. Seriously, why is it? Is it honestly just because Blizzard promoted him as the awesome hero and everyone instantly loved him because they wanted to be popular and act as though they're huge StarCraft fans? That may seem a little harsh, but that's all that comes to mind because I honestly can't see anyone here liking him of their own accord.

At least the new Raynor's actually human, if you know what I mean. He might be a depressed alcoholic, but he's so much better than the 'hero' he was in StarCraft1.

Hey Raynor was cool. >=\ Nobody might know why, but he was!

It's like asking why everyone loves Chuck Norris... There is no answer, and there never will be...

By saying that you've further proven that Raynor's a complete prat.

The thing with Raynor is that he was almost always in a position of weakness, but he did the best he could do, and do what he believed in. Macho? Not really. I never thought he was that great of hero, or a hero at all, but that was the point; he was just dude trying to do the best in the situation given. Tassadar was made for eloquence, nobility and the grand gesture, Raynor is a terran scrub doing his best to survive, and I think his voicing reflected that.

The voice he had in StarCraft1 definitely didn't portray him as the heroic underdog. He's setup as a perv when he's caught out by Kerrigan's telepathy, he's always referring to himself and what heroic things he's done or will do and then he's always going on about all his long-winded, 'heroic' bull****.

Tassadar, on the other hand, is wise, demonstrates his intelligence and, above all, is completely selfless. He's like the complete opposite of Raynor. Tassadar was the supreme Executor of the Protoss Expeditionary Fleet, who did his own good-doing over his job and sacrificed himself in order to destroy the Overmind. Raynor was obviously originally a convict who's now trying to act all noble, and is then a blind pawn who Mengsk uses to overthrow the Confederacy, not to mention how he's then used again by Kerrigan, resulting in the death of Fenix.

As I said, at least he appears to be more human in StarCraft2, much better than he ever was in StarCraft1, where he was just a hypocritical and self righteous puppet.

    He didn't write the dialogue.

I don;t see what the voice actor has to do with how the story writers portrayed the character.

well if you get a high-pitched guy voicing Raynor right now people will be like "Wut Tha F*** Brah!! He sounds uberly gay!!! ...my gay friend would like him!!"

So i think you need a right voice for the character. I like the old Jimmy, even though sometimes he sounds like a nub. But i also like the new Raynor.

Firstly, as you probably should have been able to tell, that was a rant about Raynor in general. And secondly, a character's voice is all part of that character's characterisation. Most of the 'heroic' stuff he said could have at least sounded half decent if it was spoken properly.

    That's your opinion though, Itza.
I fail to see how someone's voice can make them sound like a prat. I would think that their actions would define this designation a little better. In which case, you should be complaining about the writers, like BoP said.
It doesn't really make sense to compare the character of a thousand-year old alien life form of much greater knowledge to a thirty- or twenty-something human. They have seen and experienced more than a human could in 10 of their lifetimes. The fact that Raynor is a "perv" (or so you say because he has sexual thoughts about a woman of all things *zoinks!*) and that he is not as selfless also plays into the role the writers give humans. They are much more fallible and have faults which make them human. So really, all the things you are complaining about Raynor being in SC1 are actually points that do make him human.

But I'm curious, where in the campaign does he refer "to himself and what heroic things he's done or will do" and "go on about all his long-winded, 'heroic' bull****?" How is he a "hypocritical and self righteous puppet?" It's been a while since I played the campaign, but I honestly can't think of any instances where he seemed this way...

Raynor in SC2 both sounds and looks better. Blizzard know their stuff.

In all honesty, the game WILL rock...it's just always great to, after all this time, hear the good ol' same Raynor from all these years saying something new.

I'll admit, though, he didn't have a WHOLE lot of emotion in his voice acting in a lot of scenes..

I loved Zeratul's voice in SC1... to bad the voice actor died :( But that doesn't mean the voices won't be cool.. Blizzard doesn't hire n00b actors =))
