I'm currently contemplating purchasing SC2. I don't play the game due to the usual ladder games ( TBH I loved playing the money maps and custom maps on SC). I was wondering if there are any members here of the modding community (mapmakers) who are excited about the new map editor and whether or not they think it will make for some creative games. I haven't done research on the map editor yet so I don't have a clue on what it can bring, I just need some input from the people who work on it themselves. Thanks
You're talking about UMS then? I liked making standard skirmish FFA maps back when I was 12 or so. UMS games never really caught my attention much back then. It's like skirmish is the rollercoaster and UMS is the midway. The editor will indeed be powerful, it's like the War3 editor on roids. Loads of options, customization of units (even their models' appearance), ability for custom scripts, the works. Let me put it this way, there's been a few topics about SC2 FPS custom maps. There's a board for the map making community on here. Search the board. If it somehow doesn't come up with what you're looking for; ask those dudes for a detailed response. Neon knows his **** for one. (Or maybe one of our precious mods can move this post to the proper board? Looking at you Fenix....)
When you purchase sc2, you're also purchasing every old-school game out there. That's what Huskystarcraft said anyways... but its true, there will be much more custom games than the old somethingsomething-defense, like this this and this... and so much more, as the editor has only been out for a WEEK!!!! Give them a year and only God knows who will be making your breakfast then.
consider this: the original starcraft pretty much invented tower (turret) defense with UMS maps. Warcraft 3 continued it and these days "tower defense" is practically an entire genre of games. warcraft 3 also produced Defense of the Ancients, which itself is pretty much spawning an entirely new genre of games. that's not mentioning the remake of old games, RPG-style games (i played the DBZ RPG in warcraft 3 a lot), various zombie-survival and whatever else people can come up with. the map editor is apparently getting even MORE powerful than WC3's editor. custom maps are HUGE. they're the reason i kept playing SC and WC3 for years after i got bored of the core gameplay. i still wish "commando wars" caught on better, though. one of my favourite maps in SC, but the WC3 one wasn't quite as good.
Well, try to look at http://www.sc2mapster.com/, there you will find out how many things they have made in a week with the beta version of starcraft 2. Then think how it will be when retail comes out. I do not need to say more.
