Hello all, I'm new to SC2, but not to RTS. I just finished my placement games and ended up in Gold league, my two losses coming from Zerg players who massed Mutalisks. As a Terran player, I had a couple of missile turrets one game and about 9 vikings with 5-6 marines versus about 15-20 mutalisks. I got creamed. The previous game I had a ton of upgraded Marines and a handful of vikings, but he'd kite around the Marines and I couldn't maintain pressure on his base without letting the mutalisks run me over. I'm going to Tabula Rasa this one and clear my mind of any potential bad habits I might have picked up, and ask you all experienced members to replace the bad habits with good SC2 knowhow. How do I counter massed Mutalisks on a unit basis? (I understand I could scout better, provide more and constant early pressure, etc etc. I'm working on it, but still new. I'm trying to figure out which unit will do the trick) Best Regards, CoN
If you scan and see a spire, get those turrets up as soon as possible as well as marines and thors. You don't want to go vikings when facing mutalisks simply because mutas simply demolish vikings. Usually they switch to mass zerglings to counter your marine thor army, but just remember to bring siege tanks to make the banelings or zerglings pretty useless. If they decide to tech all the way up to ultralisks, then get tons of marauders.
as a noob zerg whenever I go muta mass the thing gives me the most headache is the marines. Mutas are rather squashy and die easily, the only thing makes them work is the number. I can easily outnumber that thors with my mutas, but facing a mass marines are different. they are small and hard to micro control my mutas against and they have long range, and they are so cheap and terran players can just mass produce them as I do to my mutas and lings. of course the seige tanks are the best anti-air units in the game so if you can max them when you see mutas coming you will be absolutely fine too (wink wink to other zergs).
Vikings actually fare decently against mutalisks. The reason they don't usually work is that you have to spend valuable minerals and gas putting up starports to get enough of them, while the zerg is just pumping mutas out of the hatcheries he had all game. The best counter is just mass marines and some thors. If you have extra gas you can get ravens and use point defense drones to block the mutalisk attacks.
Mass Marines. They cost less then mutas and you can pump em out faster then he can pump out mutas (well lol 90% of the time). If you see hes just going to mass mutas then mass marines with a couple turrents. Once the mutas are dead you should be able to storm him easily as his resources will be harder hit.
Well you can't just get marines... if he also gets banelings and gets speed for them, you will lose with pure marine. You have to get some thors too.
the potential problem with mass marines is that marines are slow. :O most zerg players will pull back their mutas as soon as the marines arrive on site and go pick on another expo same goes with thors, just slower. i personally like to place 1-2 thors with several turrets along my mineral lines to protect from muta harrass if i know my enemy has a spire. my personal best defence against muta is stationary defence. acting accordingly to the mutas movements is a waste of time and your just being harrassed. note the fact that your fastest viking cannot out run a mutalisk
heh heh heh... I did a muta rush today. Went lair before queen and got all my buildings immediately after they became available. I demolished his mineral line with my first 3 mutas and continued pumping ling/muta while he tried to fight back. He pulled his army away from the wall off which is where I got a good break with my lings. I think I had banelings too
