A while back I suggested a grenade launcher upgrade to allow the marine to take over the firebat's job of killing mass 'lings. Note howver that it is an upgrade so it would come at about the same time the firebat would have come anyway so there would be minimal balance issues

...that doesn't make any sense, the firebat came with the academy, which only required the engineering bay. and the engineering bay never gives any upgrades to anything but the stats

The academy does not require an engineering bay only a barracks. The idea was for the grenade launcher to be an upgrade at the tech lab attached to the barracks. That would put grenade launchers at the ame level of the SC2 tech tree as the bat was in the SC1 tree

Will that really be an upgrade or a research? And how's your grenade launcher idea again?

It would be an upgrade researched at the Tech Lab when connected to a barracks that gives the marine the ability to use a grenade launcher.  It wont use energy but will have a recharge like blink.

The grenades will have a small AoE good against massed units like Zerglings ad will generally be good in the same situations as firebats but will have more range.  The grenades will take some time to reach the target location so you will have to lead the group.  The splash will have minimal effect against armored targets but will annihilate infantry

Then would that make the marine very effective until middle of tier 2?

I thought thats what Stim Packs were for? Marines as first units to be produced would need upgrades to be competative in late game, they are already usefull early on.

If Drop Pods get "loadable" it will be a indirect upgrade to all infantry since they can be reinforced a lot easier. Actually the only units that have to be transported would be Tanks and Cobras.
Infantry is "podded", flying units, well, fly and the Thor is build on site.

No this was meant to be the solution to killing massed units. To allow the marine to do the same job as the firebat by dispatching lightly armored units.

But as long as the Firebat is in that would just serve to make it useless. As long as there are Firebats there won´t be grenades.

shield and bayonet stay. maybe YOU have to go

honestly, if a sharp object was so useless, then zerglings wouldn't be worth the price of piss.

A sharp object is useless when you've got a gun. Only case you can argue is the ultralisk...but we all know that they're tanks and not damage-dealers.
Only problem with the bayonet is that i automatically think of old "muskets" when i see them ..which obviously doesnt' belong in a sci-fi game set in the future.
