I moved from Silver to Gold league today... I have a pretty solid early-mid game against all three races.. but my macro is definitely weak. What are some clear cut tricks and tips to macro with Terran? I usually have a problem with maintaining a suitable army vs expanding.. and once I start expanding I have trouble juggling my resource gathering with micro of my troops. I'm winning a little over half of my games in gold, and this is usually due to the fact that I play aggressively to stifle my opponents attempts to expand (constantly scouting, and hitting them fast when they try)... however, if my aggression is held off and the game shifts gears into a 30-40 min game I start to lose steam Any help? Thanks.
Generally keep your rax and your CS macrod for sure, i usually set my rax to 3 and CS to 4 so i can scout / harass and build units and svc back home. you can pretty much control your army with 1 and 2. This is of course what i use and just a suggestion, you can use the numbers you prefer obviously =). Hope this helps
Also just in case you didn't know already, you can use the tab key to cycle through different groups of units and structures. Example: 3 rax 2 factorys set to hotkey 5, you would press tab to focus on the factorys.
I'm going to assume you know you can line up buildings by holding shift? This is a key move for Terran and Protoss especially. Tab is amazing, especially for Terran. Select your army, click stim, hit tab to select Marauders/Marines (whatevers second), hit stim again... As far as Macro goes, keep a worker SCV or two hotkeyed. Keep your important buildings hotkeyed. Hotkey any function you find yourself doing repeatedly. Make sure you've memorized all of Terran's letter hotkeys as well, this helps speed up your downtime a lot. In fact whenever you expand, hotkey that to #8, then #7 etc. This way you aren't fumbling around the mini map to get to your expansions. Oh and don't forget hitting space bar takes you to the area of battle, when you hear we are under attack... not really macro I guess but... If you had more specific information you'd like, Macro in itself has so many sub sections. What's taking up the most of your time? Is it building units, building buildings, mining expansions, figure out what that is, then develop a way to do it faster... Hehe sorry this is kind of a messy reply, I hope it makes sense...
Didn't know about the spacebar either--great help. Also, I didn't really think about hot keying a worker..that would definitely be faster than having to go to the mineral patch and pull one off when I need it..
I have the same problem as you. I kinda got the hang of macro and micro, just doing both well is pretty challenging. When I'm actively microing some units in a battle I can't really macro as well but there's a lot of moments where you can sneak in a supply depot, a barracks or a bunch of units. I usually have a worker, my unit buildings and command centers hotkeyed. For example you're going for some harrassment with some marines and a hellion. Usually I want my marines to run in first then sneak my hellion past their defenses and roast some drones, hellions are a lot faster then marines though so when you're moving your units to their base the marines have to catch up, nice little moment for some macroing. Also if you bind say one barracks with a tech lab and one with a reactor to 4, you can press DDAA and it will make 2 marauders from the tech lab one and 2 marines from the other one. Mostly why I fail at macroing is that I'm so focused on my micro I just completely forget about it, there's a lot more moments where you have time to macro then you'd think.
