I'm quite surprised that no one has posted this yet. Am I the only one brave enough to visit the battle.net forums? :p Anyway, after many postings in regard to Blizzard's move to drop LAN, Blizz CM Kevin "Karune" Yu finally spoke-up a few hours ago in one of the many threads regarding the issue.

Source: LAN parties and free Bnet are the reasons...

This..... Bothers me a lot. Especially the last one. He calls a guy a troll for suggesting that the technological Disneyland they've built around themselves wouldn't dull their concept of what their users are experiencing.

If he has a valid claim he is to structure it in appropriate mannor and dont just throw a slimy package of sarcasm and cynicism at the Blizzard lead developers. I believe that with 4-6 month beta there will be plenty of time to work on this issue if it turns out to be an issue at all. I agree with him that until at least some form of battle.net 2.0 is shown and tested further debates arent all that productive.

True. But considering the state of the Bnet forum right now, that was downright polite. Also while badly worded, it was in no way a trolling post. Overall the Blizzard mods just need to clean that place up...

I saw an article on http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3175004 about them saying there will be no LAN in Starcraft 2 and that the main reason they are taking it out is because of piracy and that they want to promote Battle.net 2.0.

To answer your question n00bonicPlauge, no I don't visit the battle.net forums because of the majority of Blizzards fan community. In my opinion it's down right terrible or maybe even the worse compared to most other communities.

Honestly, I don't blame them for taking out LAN from Starcraft 2 considering all the Internet piracy that goes on with PC games these days. Blizzard may not come out and say it but seeing the statistics on how much sales are lost due to piracy I'm sure its the main reason why they took lan out even though they are saying to promote battle.net 2.0 as well.

I hate people to pirate games and music, because they ruin it for the rest of us. I mean it gives the gaming community a bad reputation.

I do agree with you. Steampowered and Battle.net forums are filled with filthy, ungrateful, little ****s. It's no wonder Karune was so quick to snap. When you read so many of the posts out there that are just that, trolls, you kinda start lumping some responses into that when they have a hint of that trollyness included.

I never visit either of those forums, because it hurts my head how much *****ing just to ***** goes on there. And the insults are just inane....

Good to see that someone suggested the whole connect, authenticate, then LAN idea. I think it would work.

People are reacting ridiculously to this.

Something like the way Steam works is what I'd like to see....would work pretty damned well.

I dont understand or like Karune. Why does he has to point out the troll in the end. Doesnt he understand that he is feeding them once more? Hasnt he learn from the Warcraft 3 community? Is he plan stupid (yes?)? Seriously, Blizzard needs a better person in his role.

Taking out LAN play is basically saying:

"We don't want people who pirate the game to have multiplayer."

This is because it's much easier to keep pirates from being able to connect to Bnet than it is to keep them from being able to play offline on their own computer with no way to force them to verify their cd-key or anything online. It's fairly easy to set up online matches that the game thinks are LAN games, so game pirates can bypass any authentication required for normal online play.

    Unfortunately that's also saying:

"You can't have a LAN party without using Bnet on all the machines."

Which kind of sucks but oh well I think we can live with that. Anyone still using dial up, or just with slow/unstable internet is going to be disappointed though. The whole authenticate then LAN idea would work for people with internet to slow for Bnet play, but I guess the number of people who are anxious to play starcraft 2 LANs, but don't have good enough internet access for Bnet, is small enough that blizzard would rather go with a simpler plan, and the whole authenticate then LAN thing could still leave loopholes for pirates to exploit.

If this is how it works, excellent. If not...

I dunno, possibly a technological artifact here, but my internet, quite frankly, sucks. It drops out on me more often than not, my DNS doesn't allow me access to many sites, and it's just slow. My home network, however, is completely Draft-N. The number one person I play SC with is my bro, in the next room over. They take LAN capabilities out completely....Well, there goes multiplay for me
    :(

Agreed. I think the PR guys still thought they were going to unveil bnet 2.0...but they said it...OOPS.

Sucks. All of this ridiculous mess might have been fixed if they just waited. :p

Haha, the truth is though that no WOW-gamer would cancel the game for sc2, or am I wrong?
