Does anyone feel the 200 population that carried over from StarCraft is a bit outdated? SC2 looks like SC1 but it plays very differently, I think it would benefit from raising the population cap. Or would that change the balance too significantly? Although some players computer cannot seem to handle just 200 food worth of units on screen
200 is fine to me, I rarely ever get that high. But that may be because my laptop starts dropping to single digit frame rate after 30 units on screen, even less if zerg creep is involved. Which is also why I dont play 1v1 games.
It's not only a matter of army size, but also resource gathering rates, population provided per pylon/depot/overlord, total resources per expo and finally to limit the advantage that can be gained from an economic advantage. If there was no pop cap then an economic advantage would be much more powerful than a similar tech advantage since you'd end up with substantially larger army than your enemy and would limit the strategic factor. Changing the pop cap should require a total rebalance of all these things, which would in turn completely change the game... So Imo, it would be a bad idea...
Im only a bronze player and havent played a great amount of games but i play quite aggresively so i rarely get close to a 200 population game. Also i think the more troops are allowed at one time causes ALOT of micro that only the much better players are able to do. Especially from my point of view it would tip the balance to slightly less skill and who can produce those 300 or whatever population first.
Higher pop cap would kill a good potion of computers unfortunately, and, like you said, throw the balance off. The higher the pop cap, the better both Zerg and Protoss would do, while Terran wouldn't benefit near as much.
Protoss would benefit the most and would have a prevailing tactic to hold out until late game constantly. Also 1v1's aside think about 4v4's if it was raised to 300 then thats 2400 population possibly on the screen at one time and on my computer atleast, it wouldnt be a pretty sight.
I started hitting supply cap a lot when playing 3v3 (I don't play 4v4, and I never really hit cap 2v2). It makes me a little bored, plus I think a cloud of hydralisks might be nauseating. When I hit 200, I usually go crazy with buildings and upgrades. And nydus worms.
