Run a chkdsk /f. Open command prompt, type chkdsk /f

It will ask you to reboot, and on reboot, it will say Windows is checking disk for consistency, iirc. It will come up with a list of results in the end, the specific thing to look for is where it says "xKb in bad sectors", where "x" will be a number that is hopefully 0. You can also check Event Viewer, by right clicking Computer and clicking Manage, as long as you are running XP Pro.

Click Event Viewer on the left hand pane, at the top, click View, click Filter, and set a filter for each of these, individually.

Disk / disk ( Both if you have both options. )
    atapi
    ftdisk
NTFS / ntfs ( Both if you have both options. )
FAT ( If you FAT32 rather than NTFS )

If the screen comes up blank after clicking OK, that means there were no errors for that item. If there were errors, post them here.

It could potentially be a memory issue, but HDD is more likely in this case. The chkdsk /f command could potentially clear up your issue.

You have atapi errors, but no disk, fat, or ntfs?

And sorry for assuming XP, that's just what the background in the screenshot looked like :p

edit: D'oh, I saw XP taskbar and generic blue background, upon closer inspection of the taskbar, it is a XP skinned Vista or 7 taskbar.

atapi, but none of the other types of errors either indicates a potential hardware problem or a rootkit.

    Download and run GMER, http://www.gmer.net/

What we are looking for, specifically, are lines that say "copy of mbr" "suspicious modification" "modification of mbr" or just random letters / numbers on the right hand column.

Edit#2 : Oh, the random letters / numbers can be in the left hand column as well. If the path / letters inlclude the letters "mfe" "avg" "nrt" "sym" etc, those are likely from an anti-virus.

Oh, easiest thing to do would be just to post a screenshot of GMER results, that way you don't have to type them :D

    While running which scan?

GMER only takes a few seconds.

Oh! Oh! I forgot! Don't click the scan button! That takes forever!

Just open it, and it will dispaly quick results.

Viruses, especially rootkits, can do all kinds of funny things. Run Malwarebytes, delete the viruses, reboot, and then try to schedule another chkdsk /f to be on the safe side :D

Post back with MBAM results, just screenshot the virus section again.

Try in Safe Mode with Networking, tap F8 constantly while computer is starting up, from the absolute very beginning, about once a second, till you get to Advanced Start-up Options. Choose Safe Mode w/ Networking, run scan from there. There is also the chance, with those atapi errors, that you have a hardware problem :(

More likely your hard drive, the motherboard, or the cable connecting the two.

Random crashes could be attributed to the power supply, keep checking Event Viewer, If it keeps populating with atapi errors after removing rootkit, one of those three things is probably bad.
