Input Signal Out of Range

Greetings! I am currently getting the message code "Input signal out of range" when I attempt to run SC2. I can hear the game but am not able to view it. I have used multiple display settings and all of my listed refresh rates but have had no luck.

The system runs XP and a 4670 card with all of the updates I could download. 2GB mem, AMD 5600, and a Hanns G monitor.

    Any ideas?

Find out the exact model of the monitor, or check windows update to see if there is a optional driver you can download for your monitor. Then your videocard and games will know exactly what they can do, and what they can't.

sounds like StarCraft is setting to a resolution that isn't available on the monitor.

Many thanks for the reply and it made me look closely at the drivers as well as the updates. This allowed me to correct the problem. I had assumed the 4670 drivers were used for the display as I downloaded those updates but the system refuses to use them. The driver being used was instead the old 5.1.2001.0 plug and play. I could not locate a microsoft update for it. It seems that every time I allow the system to 'update' the display driver it reverts back to the old plug and play. The 2006 Hanns G driver had to manually reinstalled but it does work for my HW191D although no updates are available for it from any source. SC2 had advised me to update the display driver on install and I think this is what caused the switch to the old drivers.

Any idea why the system will not use the 4670 display drivers for XP? They are the most current drivers...

    Thanks!

    Greetings TheXev,

Thank you for the response. I did all of the microsoft updates the last time and checked all possible updates listed on the site.

This is part of the DxDiag I sent to Blizzard:

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.100216-1514)
    Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
    System Manufacturer: System manufacturer
    System Model: System Product Name
    BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
    Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
    Memory: 2046MB RAM
Page File: 870MB used, 4122MB available
    Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
    DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
    DX Setup Parameters: Not found
    DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.5512 32bit Unicode

Card name: ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series
    Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip type: ATI Radeon Graphics Processor (0x9490)
    DAC type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
    Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9490&SUBSYS_20031787&REV_00
    Display Memory: 1024.0 MB
    Current Mode: 1024 x 768 (32 bit) (75Hz)
    Monitor: HW191D
    Monitor Max Res: 1600,1200
    Driver Name: ati2dvag.dll
    Driver Version: 6.14.0010.7101 (English)
    DDI Version: 9 (or higher)
    Driver Attributes: Final Retail
    Driver Date/Size: 7/6/2010 18:47:56, 299520

Currently the actual driver listed for the monitor under properties is the Hanns 1.0 from 2006 and using it does allow SC2 to run. I am though still looking for a more current driver and am wondering why the system doesn't operate with the ati driver for XP as I thought my update was current.

    Thanks!

Seems you aren't the only one having trouble with these ATI drivers and a Blizzard game.

So, let me get this straight, you have to forcibly install these drivers in Windows XP?

There is one thing that sticks out to me though looking at your data. You are using an LCD monitor, and your desktop refresh rate is set to 75Hz. Try lowering it to 60Hz and starting StarCraft II to see if that makes a difference.

If the system is allowed to auto update the drivers for the monitor it installs the oldest possible drivers. The system will only use the Hanns 1.0 driver if it is manually selected. If any of the ATI drivers are selected from the ati file they display as incomplete and the updates from the ati site download but then indicate that they are not compatible. I am currently able to play SC2 with the hanns 1.0 driver and the game plays without a stutter. I do get random crashes every so often but I doubt it is related to the monitor drivers. I just wanted everything fully updated to rule it out.

I will reset the refresh rate.

    Many thanks!
