Inconsistency with the Marine Shield

look at all of the marine, if you notice that some of them have shields and others do not. Whats up with that? Is it more than cosmetic?

 

Perhaps marines made before the upgrade dont get a shield?

Though my thread is more general, it deals with such upgrades so this is pretty much a duplicate thread.

 

As far as i remember the bayonet and the shield comes after the 20hp upgrade.

They've always had a bayonet. And it's just for show.

 

ok cool. Also whats that thing in the top right of the second pic and whats coming out underneath it? Is it an overlord using it's ability to create more creep? If it is they better make the animation look alot better

It looks like all marines,before the upgrade, do not recieve the shields. Poor budget planning, and it looks like the overlord got back from a kegger.

 

It certainly does look like the visual upgrade only affects newer units. I think this is not a good development. It's ok for an upgrade like the Marine's Shield, but you would have to extend it to armour and damage upgrades for consistency which would change the whole impact of upgrades. Also logically it actually makes more sense for armour upgrades to not apply to older units but for the shield upgrades to apply to all units. When you think about it there's no reason why marines can't stop by the armoury to pick up a shield after it's been developed.

 

yea, i kinda of don't like the inconsistency of marine shields, we can even think of it this way, in real life, where there is a weapons upgrade, the marines out in the field will go back to the base or whatever to get the upgraded weapons for better efficiency while the newer fresh marines will just train to get the newer weapons

 

You couldn't extend that to the other races though. A zergling couldn't go back to base to have a new skin fitted. ^_^

 

i think you have to individually equip the shield with the marine, making it more like a police force: a row of shields in front, and the riflemen behind.

 

I know this slightly off topic but I had an idea about the shield. There were a lot of people who didn't like the shields and thought they made the marines look too much like warcraft footmen. Anyway I was thinking and might have a compromise. What if they moved the shield to the front of the gun? It would leave both hands free (well more free), still provide protection (albeit less than the old full body shield would of course), and they wouldn't look like footmen. What do you think?

Oh and I think that every unit should instantly get an upgrade once it's researched.

 

but then it would look like the footmen from the cinematics with the lance/spear with the shield dangling from it. i personally love the one hand gun, one hand shield concept. i hope it stays
