In Empire at War, you can go into Cinematic mode, and it does a view of the battle, that honestly I love. I was thinking, what if they did the same for Starcraft two, a nice panning view of a large battle between Zealots and Zerglings( Or Marines, whatever you like)

a high up birds eye view with no control over command?
    sounds excellent ^.^!!
 just because i can lol
all we need now are some rather high unit supply limits and maps...

With like a "turn off/turn on" button? That'd be cool. :p

It sounds very nice, in terms of pretty looking, but it would really only be used against players far less skilled than you.
If you are fighting someone of skill anywhere near yours, you should always be commanding your forces, not attack moving them somewhere and then viewing the battle from above.

    Maybe for replays?

For replays this would be fine. For the game it would not. StarCraft 2 will require lots of micro not incredibly massive armies of hundreds of men just rushing towards each other with horses in flanking positions running from the sides and slightly to the back.

    of course which is why:

besides, starcraft was renowned back then for being a massing game lol
would be nice to sit back and watch some fun get squashed

the only thing that will be squashed is your army if you don't micro. 600-1000 men in games like rome total war or medieval 2 total war is fine not to micro but not starcraft

well, it would be cool, but if Blizz desided to do this, they would actually take more time in releasing the game. maby for an expansion.

well if it was just for replays they would just have to not restrict the camera as much as they do in the game. Not that hard.

I think a more close up ground level view would be better. That way you're more "in" the action and can see up close zealots slicing up enemies, maries unloading their guass rifles, etc. instead of just a general overview.

Anyway I don't think it's gonna happen but it would be cool (if rarely used) feature.

i think all these ideas are awesome only if they work for replays. Because the game will be beautiful, and if you played a good game you can sit tight and watch it like a movie as a replay {have like a Movie mode or something}. But if you want to watch the match just for learning or technicals purpise's then you can change the replay mode to something like ST had .

Latter on one simple battle might turn into a movie, just look at how 300 turned out!

i think it depends. some games in starcraft you need micro to win and some just pure mass units to win.

starcraft is not all about micro, its only for small and none minerals map and rsuh or real games.

what about big game random battles all out war. we need more units. starcraft is not warcraft,.

and micro's like 12 hydralisk vs 12 zealots doesn't really come in handy in massive battles (tnx powerkickazz, im actually practicing it right now, i think you separated them in two groups ctrl 1 and ctrl 2? right/).

microing is usually only for small rush real games battle.

well random games like building units first to the max and massive units battle is nice to see too 8)

in not even entirely sure I WANT to see the action close up judging from the fact that the immortals (among other things) look rather basic detail-wise when they are close up.

I have played empire at war, and I found the cinematic feature rather annoying =/ It would often pay attention to random stuff, and miss big events during the battle, like a capital ship getting blown up.

The camera control will always be best through the hands of the player. However, I believe they will be adding a "through the eyes" function to replays, so you can see exactly where the persons screen was.

That would be a good edition to replays. Being able to see what the person was looking at.

    starcraft 2 cinematics?

So, I relay hope they get every bit of info, every facial charictaristics perfectly organised because...I WANA SEE CINEMATICS THAT ACTUALY HAVE TO DO WITH WHAT YOURE PLAYING AND THE CHARACTERS...who the hell are lester and sarge? why are alexis, whats his face the admiral guy that I like and fenix the only characters you see in the cinematics and even then fenix just looks like any other zealot? why do the hydralisk never attack with the rasor spine systeme? And why do zerglings look like mini hydras?and even if there so crappy How does blizzard manage to pull them off and make me like them

I think it has to do with buget, lack of time, the limited technologie, and the fact that blizzards just awsome like that :)

Zerglings look like zerglings in the cinematics.

I think the minor characters like Lester and Sarge are there randomly to tell what really happening. The Zerg are already at Mar Sara oh noes kind of deal. Yea I think this time they are going to have a lot more and longer cinematics. I really can't wait. It's like one of the top 5 things I can't wait for in SC2. ^_^

ok well if you feel that way ill need to show you then: Watch the intro for brood war and you'll see that the only zerg type in that animation is the zergling and guardian, and then tell me if you thought those where hydra's

    you see hydras too

its just that they melee'd in the cinematic.

You see the zerglings attacking that marine who cant shoot for s**t and you see the hydra attacking the flamethrower dude.
