I'm wondering how to increase my virtual memory because when i play wc3 or generals, it lags and the Page File Use maxes out, is this the problem? or is is because i have a crappy graphics card or processor? any1 assist? (wrong place, find my other thread)
RAM isn't virtual memory, that's in fact physical. Free space on the hard disk that has Windows on it can serve as virtual memory, you can set it to any size basically but the more you have the better. The page file can be fragmented, I'd suggest defragmenting it (that can only be done after a reboot since it must be handled when it's not in use, before Windows loads) with an appropriate program such as Diskeeper. And I doubt you have a weak system for Warcraft3, that game has low requirements.
sorry about the RAM part, confused for a sec. my problem is the gaming speed either the problem is the graphics card, the 512mb virtual memory limit, or my AMD 2300(or something close to that) processor EDIT: oh so defragmenting will help preventing my laggy gameplay?
512mb for virtual memory? That is way too low, set it to something like 1500mb. And your processor is more than enough but you should tell us more about your video card
i dont know about my video card, but i think its like a 100+mb something something and how do is set the limit???
Click start -> settings -> control panel -> system -> special (tab) -> settings (under performance) -> special (tab) -> modify (under virtual memmory). Mine is at 1500mb. To find out what kind of video card you have, click start -> run: dxdiag -> OK. When it's done, press the third tab which says display or something like that. This was translated from Hungarian so some words might be different but you get the idea
Your system is underperforming for some reason, I'd suggest a complete defragmentation (with Diskeeper - I think it's very good, I think it even has a trial version). Defragment the whole of the disk or partition that Windows is on including the MFT and the page file. If you've never done any defragging then it should take about 4 hours for a 40gb disk/partition but of course the time will increase if you have a larger disk. I'd also suggest installing the latest directx (which is 9.0c iirc) along with the latest video drivers for your card from here. If you've done all this then it should give a considerable boost in FPS.
Sounds to me like your page file isn't being updated fast enough. I would suggest a newer SATA HDD. 7200 RPM FTW
What OS are you using? There is a Vista update that is supposed to improve the page file usage. If you are using a 32 bit Vista I can find it for you if not I can give you instructions for altering the page file
im just using windows pro sp2, ill try defragging my system, will defragging affect my files or programs? ive never done tit before
It will not affect anything except for improving the performance. All defragging does is move the fragments of files together in order to access it faster. It's as if you had to deliver the mail to houses that are one block away then suddenly a miracle would pull them together to make them neighbours, which would shorten the time needed to deliver all the mail But I'd suggest not using your computer while it's defragging because it would only slow the process down.
