So, I was just wondering how much you guys mapped. In addition, I'm also interested to hear about what kinds of maps you like to make most, and if you've thought of anything really cool and original once or something? Myself, I like to map a lot. I was mapping back when I had only Warcraft II, but StarCraft only made it that much better... I like to make maps for multiplaying with my friends, though we don't do that too much anymore... although recently, my brother, his friend and I have been multiplaying sometimes, maybe I should make a map for it. You guys know the map that was in the Campaign folder, the one that featured the respawning Torrasque? I edited it so that the Terran and Protoss you're usually playing was the enemy, and one of the players was Orange and the other one was Yellow (yea, that'd be the Torrasque). That was really interesting! I had to strengthen the enemies a bit though to make it more fun for the Orange player. I also once made a map where I had a big base and two other players (my two friends who also played a lot at the time (but who, in all humbleness, I owned)) had smaller bases but could back each other up easily. That was a long time ago though and I only played it once. Besides that, I sometimes try to make campaigns, but rarely see them through very far and never to the end so far. I still want to sometimes though! Maybe with StarCraft 2, I will... I got farther with Warcraft III than with StarCraft, after all... So, I'd love to hear what you guys have to say on this.
I've turned quite a few normal maps into money maps, i just love money maps.... i've even modified the 'big game hunter' to my preference
Ooh, I forgot to mention that... I do that almost all the time too... when playing a Custom Map or Multiplaying on them... although recently I've discovered that it's not that annoying to run out of resources after all... it happens to the computer too! (Or the human enemy) Hmm something to think about when next playing Multiplayer with my friends.
I'm wondering if someone would be able to give me some advice though... when I'm trying to create a map where the enemy already has a base, and I'm using one of the scripts (like Expansion Zerg Campaign Medium or something), at the location that is put over their heardquarters (ie in this case Hatchery/Lair/Hive), they build all buildings anew, even if they already have them... (also if I use Expansion Zerg Town Area and stuff)... though that's how I've seen it done in some of the official Campaign maps by Blizzard (such as the one with the respawning Torrasque in it), and that's how I learned it, and they don't do that there... so what am I doing wrong? Does anybody know? Oh, and also, is there a way to script your own AIs for SC as you can for WCIII? Cause that'd totally rock =D
Did you put a starting location for that player? If you do, they will build from scratch. I think you don't put one in when you already give them buildings... I can't really remember wait until someone more expert replies sorry
No... that can't be it - you can't save without a Starting Location for a player you have placed units for. Also, on the maps where the same Triggers were used but they did not build from scratch (ie the Torrasque maps etc.), Starting Locations were also used. Besides, I think what you're referring to is the Melee behavior of the Computer Players... they shouldn't act that way with "Use Map Settings". Thanks for the effort though... maybe I can try once to place all their units by Triggers, instead of placing them on the map, so no Starting Location would be required (hope that's possible, since I still have to put them on "Computer" in Player Settings... anyway), just to be sure.
I tried to make some RPG maps with some friends and I modded a few I found on the net, but that was a long time ago. I had many ideas but I was really bad with terrain so I usually didn't complete my projects. Edit 1: But now I've starting doing maps again because of all of you on this site. You're really helping me. Many thanks! :good: Be on the lookout for my many crazy ideas in the future ^_^ Edit 2: As of 2007-11-28 I've stopped doing maps. I don't know when I'll start again....
I come up with map ideas all the time, though I only make them come to life sometimes. I came up with quite an ingenious dodge map but I will have to keep that secret for the time being. Anyway, I am back at mapping and thus, a huge number of my projects have been revived.
I opened Campagain Editor, fooled around with different terrain types, wow water, wow stones, etc... Got bored and closed it.
I've made quite a few maps. What kind depends what the original game is. In Starcraft, for example, I only made a few maps, but I constantly tweak them. I'm trying to make a map thats actually funny AND appropriate enough for public release (really hard, since I started it during that age where the dumbest of cusses garnered laughs from friends and classmates), but it still has problems. The others are mainly strategic infinite money maps ( like high ground having little build space but safer, low ground would have massive build space but very vulnerable). In Warcraft 3 I made maps for my friends. My two favorites where Armageddon (a world map copied from someone (who I apologize to, since I don't know who first made it), and a DoTA/strategy like game. Armageddon’s only "claim to fame" as it were was its massive custom unit count. It actually hit the unit limit, which isn't so much as hard to make as it is to balance. But...well...the file got corrupted, and now I don't have it anymore. The other game is a game of MASSIVLY overpowered units. One unit could annihilate an entire base if not killed. Other units were weak but took one second and 10 gold to build. The most important part were the heroes. See, each of the four sides ( 2 vs 2, top vs bottom style, with creeps and river in mid, including one that doubles each time killed) has a hero. These heroes are strong enough to kill two-three of the regular heroes (used FT) by themselves, assuming they are all the same level. The problem, however, was that the hero respawned for the enemy if it died, including creeps. There was also a wild hero up for grabs, and Oprah (when summoned, she generally destroyed one side or the other, since she has instant death attacks and 6000 health). Fun and all, but never released. I also made a few maps for Warcraft 2, but they blew. For Starcraft, I want to make a second Armageddon. I wonder what the custom unit limit will be ^_^
check out the MOTM for (i think) november two of my maps are there i usually mod diplo maps to normal starcraft maps pretty fun
Whenever I map I start doing something that's similar to actual mapping, then I get bored and I start placing Infested Terrans everywhere.
I made a map once and sometimes i help my friend map but for the most part i dont map. P.S The map i made is under the post My map.
I've never done an SC map. I don't have a lot of freetime, so when I'm doing SC, I'm playing the game, not mapmaking. Back in my Doom/Quake glory days, I hacked the game quite a bit and did a few custom maps. Even tried some maps in Doom3, but that's been about it.
Back when I started mapping I didn't really stop, I use to eat at my computer table and map. Old memories, joyful times. ^^; these days waiting on sc2 to be released then can start mapping on that.
