for a long time sc1 has been something big in korea. establishing there own proleagues dedicated specifically for SC where thousands of watchers come to watch the best players in the entire world play. so my question to u guys is how big do u think SC2 will be in korea compared to sc1? do u think the pros will stick to playing only sc1 proleague games or do u think sc2 will take over the proleague?
Next Sunday I want you to turn on a popular televised football match. Now, imagine that but StarCraft 2
Well Initally I don't see it being as big as SC1. But with the right exploitation by Blizz and enough cash prizes for the pro tournaments, there is a chamce it might be as big as SC1. Why I say this as SC2 does not have the new feeling SC1 has simply cause it is a sequel.
We'll have to see the koreans themselves for opinions. I don't think the reception will be that bad anyways.
When Blizzard let us sign up for beta candidacy (early last year, I think), they said (at one of the BlizzCons) that there were few sign-up requests from Korea. I think StarCraft II will be just as big as StarCraft I, but will be more widespread and less popular in Korea. StarCraft I just came out at the right time in Korea; you can't expect that country to have not changed in 12 years.
It'll take time, but the majority of the StarCraft and WarCraft III progamers (and, to a much, much smaller extent, other non-Blizzard competitive games) will have to switch to StarCraft II. The StarCraft II audience will be far wider than these past games so regardless of how the pros themselves feel about it, they will have to go to where the audience is. If the audience feels that StarCraft 2 is more interesting to watch, then they will switch. Blizzard doesn't have to be in that right place, right time again because they've already got the fan base. I would be surprised and somewhat disappointed if a few years after release StarCraft 2 didn't bring some unity between the StarCraft and WarCraft 3 audiences. Even if it's only 30%-40% from each community, add that with the increased popularity, increased marketing push from what has become a massive company, old veterans of the progaming scene returning, and people who were not interested in the original, for whatever reason, I'd say StarCraft 2 has a good chance of becoming as popular or more popular than StarCraft is right now. I'm sure it was more popular in its earlier days even though I didn't follow StarCraft progaming then so I don't think it'll be THAT big given the "right place, right time" and newer games some people have mentioned that does apply here. I posted an interview with Boxer a few weeks ago on the state of progaming and his expectations for StarCraft 2. It was quite interesting so if you're interested go and check it out. http://www.starcraft2forum.org/forums/showthread.php?t=12448&highlight=boxer
It's hard to predict, because it depends entirely on how the game is received, and how much hype the media and the players create over it. But they do have a thing for Blizzard games (they have WC3 championships too) so I'd say more likely to be big than not big. I wouldn't be surprised if televised gaming championships become trailed in England in this new decade. We have nothing like that atm. Blizzard could lead the way there if they wanted to. In fact, televised computer game championships were experimented circa 1990 in England with random games that were released at that time. 1990/91 was when 16-bit really started to draw a lot of hype.
my guess is that the general korean public will adopt it much quicker than the professionals. the pro leagues probably won't take it up until after a few balance patches come out.
