Hi Guys, Pretty new to this game and RTS online in general...currently playing as Terran. I have played a lot of games trying to get used to it tho and im improving but I have a hard time playing against other Terran players. Every single one I play will either turtle in his base and surround it with siege tanks and turrets or sometimes they are actually a bit better and expand into a second base but again they siege it and turret it and I cant seem to break in. It means I have control of the map but the games are taking in excess of an hour to play and i have quit out more than once due to boredom. It gets a bit silly when I've rebuilt my army like 5 times over trying to break in and he still hasnt moved from his base. What should I be doing here? Getting in about them before they siege? Or is there a good counter to siege tanks? Any help would be most appreciated
What I do in those situations is that I use thors as a meat shield. I explain myself: Thors have alot of health, they make perfect meat shield against the tanks, while your tanks move and fire at his tanks. If he target fires the tanks then the thors will fire at the tanks. It's pretty simple. Also remeber to take control of the map and to give as much upgrades as you can. He has 1 base, then he won't have enough money for upgardes, if he gets upgardes, he will have smaller army so either your in better spot. Thors are expensive but as he turtles. then you can take 3 or 4 bases and it won't be a problem.
Breaking turtles is always an issue for new players. I'm trying to learn Terran, want to play some practice games?
Cheers guys. I've kinda solved my problem by hitting early and not giving them a chance to turtle. Was trying to get a couple of medivacs loaded with marines to drop in on mineral lines and found I had a lot of excess minerals so built some hellions to drop too and its working well. Moved up to ~10 in my bronze league..not brilliant but im still a noobie
It's usually good news if you can get an opponent to turtle, because you can out-macro them. If they turtle, just maintain a strong and constantly growing army while taking expansions all over the place. Meanwhile, keep scouting to watch for tricks (as a terran turtle can still hit really hard if you don't have the right units to deal with what he has), and try to harass if you can. Usually in the late game against a terran player, I get battlecruisers. They counter tanks because tanks of course can't hit air. But don't rush to get them, just out-macro the guy, build up a balanced army, and then add about 6 battlecruisers supported by a generous amount of vikings (because you don't want battlecruisers stuck facing the same supply worth of his vikings along with turrets). I keep my second and third starports hidden so that he won't be ready for my battlecruisers, and then I hit him all at once. Usually it's gg if it gets to that point, but even if he manages to take down your battlecruiser/viking combo, just build it up again and hit him even harder because he'll be out of money and you won't because you have more bases. It certainly shouldn't take five waves of that. Two, tops. Games should not take an hour. I've only ever had one game last over 40 minutes. And in that one game (that lasted a little over an hour), it was because me and a diamond level zerg player ended up in a really weird situation.
I find the key to breaking the turtle shell is to expand constantly and choke out any new expansions quickly. You can do this with positioning and sheer numbers. I have a video that details this strategy for you really well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ux8VFqmXWvA Anything the turtle builds trapped in his shell will be very small compared to what you can build with your raging mineral flows you will have from cutting him off and annihilating his expansions quickly and efficiently. Hope that helps.
