Ok here is my problem- I have had starcraft since it came out but i stopped playing it for a few years and when i decided to play again i lost my brood war CD so i went to the nearest gamestop and got the starcraft battle chest. i was planning to use my old cd key to activate it but it required the new one so i put it on and was pretty satisfied . but then this computer got a virus and i have to wipe this computers hard drive but i lost my new CD-key so i cant reinstall it without buying a new one ! So i am wondering is there a way to recover the CD-key?
The lesson here: keep every piece of the original packaging. The same thing happened to me five times (for different reasons each time) resulting in my having spent roughly $120 on battle chests over the past seven years. I know of no way to recover the CD key. If it were me, I'd buy another copy, download the patch that lets you play without the CD, then copy it to around 50 flash drives, while leaving the original discs and a dozen written copies of the CD key in a nuclear holocaust-proof safe. But hey, that's just me and my horrible luck.
The only reason you would need a cd key would be to connect to battle.net. If you're just playing in a LAN with other people, you could just go ahead and use the portable sc bw version.
Got the same kind of problem with an EA game DVD. Couldn't set the game again. My problem was due to the fact that you can just set a copy in ONE computer, but as I had 3 OS in a same computer the game recognized 3 computers when I unistalled the EA game from one OS to re-set it up in another OS. So I contacted the tech support. They got an e-mail address. They asked me to give them photographs of the original box, the original manual, the original CD-key (behind the manual), the original DVD. That's just to show them that you don't have a pirated copy. And to send them to their e-mail address. A bit more after 24 hours later I got a brand new CD-key from them. Hope that Blizzard gives the same solution.
i do have the game installed on this computer but i have to move it to the new one because this one is REALLY messed up.
According to the Blizzard support pages, you have to send them your actual cd (/case) / manual, not just a picture of it. So depending on where you live, it might be cheaper to buy a new copy of the game.
Well thanks i guess that answers my question but i am curious about what joneagle meant buy his post because i DO have the game installed.
