I'm all open on this issue. Graphics that didn't make sense never became a problem in SC1. But here's a few examples anyway: Drones SCVs and Probes were supposed to fly in SC1 (that's why they look like they're hovering). If they can't fly why not put some legs in? Nothing else floats on ground in the game. Hydralisks were supposed to be melee units, now their arms are useless like a T-Rex. The mutalisk attack (bouncing living thing) were supposed to be the Queen's attack (which makes more sense cause the "Queen" was so named for breeding these things). All original transports were supposed to land and lift off in SC1 (and not have units disappear and reappear under them).
Workers were originally flying units, yes, but they aren't the only hovering units in the game. Vultures, Archons, and Dark Archons also hover. As they don't touch the ground, they don't need legs, why give them legs if they don't need them? Anyway, SCVs do have legs, but I think that's because the pilots have legs. We haven't seen the Hydralisks in SC2. For all we know they will have a melee attack. Anyway, claws can be used for things other than attacking. Seeing as their primary mode of transportation is slithering, it seems reasonable that they would need other appendages to stabilize their bodies when attacking or climbing or digging. While Mutalisks are back, and while their attacks still bounce, there is a chance that Glave Wurms won't be the same. The graphics seem to be leaning towards the old Mutalisk attack, which was a green acid-like attack. We don't know for sure though, because the Zerg haven't been properly unveiled. Blizzard seems to be playing around with landing animations, at least with the Dropship. I for one hope it is just an animation, one that doesn't affect gameplay. With the Phase Prism, it makes sense that it doesn't land, because it's now just assembling the cargo on the ground below the unit.

Remember the cinematics did show Hydras pulling themsleves along with ther claws. As a general rule Zerg hare sharp and pointy whenever possible
Yup. The claws serve 3 purposes that doesn't have anything to do with combat: Burrowing, moving and to look more badass.
