Graphics corruption on NVIDIA 9400GT card

    System specs:
    Dell Dimension 3000 3GHz
    2GB RAM
    Windows XP Home
EVGA PCI NVidia 9400 GT 1Gbyte
All software and drivers fully up to date

Game runs fine for a few minutes, and then the graphics gets corrupted. Usually like the
attached screenshot, but sometimes just washed out to white. Game can be recovered
by going to the options, changing some random graphics option (if you can still read them)
    and accepting.

Less often, random pixels will start to wash out the screen. In this case, the
corruption continues even after the game is stopped, and the computer needs
    to be rebooted.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is your video card overheating perhaps? Try running HWMonitor or GPU-Z in the background to monitor GPU temps.

    Max = 46C. Shouldn't be a problem.

Someone else reported a similar problem to this and it was solved by updating the drivers. You say your drivers are up-to-date... so... I am stumped..

Could always try older drivers, to see if its something caused my the newest ones. You can look here for a list of beta/WHQL drivers for your card to try.

Is this a system you built yourself? If so, try taking out the card and using some contact cleaner (high grade stuff, no alcohol) on the contacts.

I had the exact same problem as you and it drove me nuts trying to figure how to fix it.
Here's what worked for me: TURN OFF PhsyX! or at least set it to cpu in the nVidia control panel.

    Hope that helps!

    thats a wierd fix
sc2 doesn't use physx and all physics is handled by the cpu
even says so in the options

9400GT must have a standing issue with StarCraft 2. I wish I could find newer nVidia bet drivers newer then the current release to ask people to try. -_-

dotuletz: Can you post a dxdiag dump please.

To run it=> Windows_logo_key+r, dxdiag. If you have 64-bit windows, click the button at the button that says "run 64-bit dxdiag," Then save all the data by clicking "save all information..." zip/rar the text file and attach it to the post.

    9400gt dxdiag dump

Here you go. directx 10 dump on NVIDIA 9400GT with xp sp3.
I've updated my nvidia drivers and my directx 9c, when that didn't worked i switched on directx 10, same results (only now my pointer acts up appearing and disappearing several times a second).

As i saw many nvidia cards have this problem, also some ati. i found this video graphics bug, it seems many have this. Sometimes if i continue playing the bug gets worse untill i can't see anything and must exit (ALT+F4 / task manager)

    *edit: forgot the dump :)

Okay, you have a HUGE problem. Direct 10 cannot be installed on Windows XP. It is imposable. Yet your dxdiag is showing it installed. I can only assume that you hacked it onto your system using something like this. This isn't real DirectX 10. You first need to uninstall this hack and revert back to proper Direct X 9.

Next, try disabling physX. the 9400GT should support it since its newer then an 8 series card, so to check your setting: Open the Nvidia control panel by right clicking on the desktop and selecting it, then under "3D settings" is "Set PhysX Configuration" which allows you to disable it.

You have some other drivers that are slightly outdated, but nothing that would cause this. I'd nuke the DX 10 hack and try disabling PhysX.

If you really want DirectX 10+ gaming, the real solution is to upgrade to Vista or Windows 7. The 9400GT isn't even that great of a DX 10 card, so I wouldn't worry about trying to play games in DX 10. StarCraft 2 only uses DX 9 paths anyway.

Yeah, you already had the newest drivers. Only thing i could think of was that DX10 hack was throwing something off.

Starcraft 2 can run in DX10? or is it strictly set onto 9?

Damn shame so many people are having problems some worse than others

    StarCraft 2 is a DX9 only game.

actually, the problem is still there. just reinstalled starcraft 2, same. with all the graphics turn to low it doesn't happen as often, but it still does. just lost my save games too from the last 2 hours, don't know why. anyway i'll get a savegame and play from then on...
i am 90% my 9400gt is the problem, 9% it's a bug in the game they didn't fix yet, and 1% it's the end of the world.
Thanks for the support TheXev, but i think i will play this way, really want to end this game one way or the other...
If solution comes up, please reply.

    Bye

Its so common on the 9400GT that its hard to not all it a driver issue. I'm wagering its nVidia's...

I haven't found any newer beta drivers for nVidia to try... makes me wish I still knew people who worked there to ask if it is an issue or not.

as i read, i`ll give advice to others: turn off physX and (don't know if it works, but give it a try) turn down hardware acceleration 2 steps (display proprietes->settings->advanced->troubleshoot)...
also turn graphics ingame to low, the bug happens just few times from then on... it helped me finish the game

Yeah, its not really a good solution though... just going to have to pray this is addressed in a newer nVidia driver.
