Now Im even more convinced that they should be the reincarnation of the firebats of old. Thats why im making this thead to find out how many agree. Goliath + Valkyrie + Firebat = Viking First of, Air-Viking should only be able to attack air and Land-Viking only land units. But that gatling gun looks as if it could be aimed upwards and well, it would just be dumb if that gatling gun just fired on land units whilst marines can shoot battlecruisers. Fire is just a hundred times cooler. It gives them that "needs more micro" feel. I actually kind of like the Flamethrower idea. It would be a nice touch, but maybe a little bit inconvenient for a walker. Anyway, I like the pic.
Hmmmm...interesting idea. I do however like the Gatling gun idea for pure badassness....but plenty of ppl still like fire, so we'll see how that goes
hhmm. looks nice. if they put some extra cool effect and details on the fire then i would vote for it. the fire range should be long, this is no ordinary firebat, the vikings are big and plus tall grasses should get burn. ^^
Good idea, Right now the Vikings gattling guns don´t even have the fire rate of a gattling gun. They shoot bursts instead. :-\ Allthough I would vote for this idea I´d like to suggest an alternative: Blizzard could remodel the Viking to only have one gattlinggun and one rocketpod. In fighter mode the Viking will use its gattlinggun when engaging groundunits and it won´t be able move. It will act like a mobile tower. When engaging air units it will use both weapons: this is where The viking excels at. In flyer mode the Viking only flies, but to make it up for not being able to attack enemies the Viking will be able to cloak and fly very fast. Imagine the strategical possibilities to ambush: land between workers spew a constant barrage of high caliber ammunition and take off as soon as the enemy retaliates. However this idea would need other air anti-air units to be altered or even scrapped. Greetings
lol having the flamethrower makes it looks sooo much like the dreadnought in warhammer. I rather have a firebat like unit (i.e the reaper upgrade)
I like the idea but I'm not totally sold. A flamethrowing mech should have longer range than a firebat. Longer range would mean less accuracy, less accuracy would be like splash damage, which I wouldn't necessarily agree with. That would mean less range if they didn't want splash damage, which then means a near-melee mech. I love the art though, badass.
This idea looks cool but i'm afraid that it could be imba. I can imagine 6 Vikings fly to my base and kill all the probe/drones in 3 second. Firebat is a small unit with less hp, poor maneuverability and high damage. Vikings have more hp (I guess) and they are so large that if 6 of them stand between the crystals and the base, one will have no chance to save a single probe.
After watching how the Viking moves on the ground I think it would look awkward if it had flamethrowers. This about how slow it is and the fact it needs to get real close to get that damage from the flamethrower. The firebats had the stim pack which let them motor right in close real fast so they could land a couple of shots in. I think a mech with a flamethrower would have to be weaker but much quicker. Like a viking on a diet. Viking = huge mech that NEEDS to have a badass chaingun Flamethrower mech...maybe something like a tweaked Vuture that is really quick and maneuverable.
Mini-guns, an air attack, AND a flamethrower would be a little over the top. And if I had to choose, I would probably choose the mini-guns instead. Don't get me wrong, I love flames just as much as the next guy. But I would prefer the range of a gun over the hot-ness of a flame.
so then blizz should make another mech that shoot fires or has rocket luncher with AOE fire damage. ^^
You can when they don't even automatic fire, they do bursts last I saw... found it really odd. Like some Gatling Shotgun, reminscent of the huge VS Shotgun in Lost Planet. That's a really nice edit: It would be awesome but they'd need to redesign the gatling guns into flame throwers. Not to mention rewrite the background for it, it'll be hard reinforcing the praticallity of a transforming, flamethrowing robot. That said, I still like the idea of giving Reapers flamethrowers.
Im more of a gatling gun man. However given the potency of the new campaign editor i would imagine it would be fairly easy to switch the projectile type to flame. Assuming of course animations for flames, fire, fireballs, ect will be in the game.
After second thought I think Ryno is right. The Stim Pack helps the firebat a lot against ranged units. So the chaingun should stay, but the firerate is really awkward. I know it is because of balance reasons, but still it looks stupid. Maybe it is better to give the viking large machineguns like the Goliath. If Blizzard decides not to bring back the firebat then let us discuss flamethrowers for the reaper. Would that be a good idea? The Reaper is allready very fast to close in quickly and burn those wretched zerglings to ashes. What you think?
