There's a way to run free private servers.

Maybe WoW will be free after another MMO takes center stage years from now.

Let's try to not publicly state that.

Private servers are bad, mmkay? Playing on one is a direct violation of the ToS. you know, that thing you scroll through without reading and accept?

    So, uh, don't do it

They are never gonna make it free.
If they are obligated to make it free, they'll just close it.

Maybe if a new MMO comes out.

But most likely theyll just close the game.

They'll never 'close' the game intentionally.

After all, after ten years, StarCraft Bnet is still open, and there's just a few more people playing World of Warcraft then there is StarCraft on a daily basis.

    Well i guess you're right.

Diablo 1 is still up on b.net, it just has loads of glitches.

So what's gameplay like when an MMO dies? Has anyone experienced it before?

Anyone who's playing WAR or Tabula Rosa is. The death of an MMO is quick and brutal.

It starts off with either a lowering of the subscription price or additional time for the same.

    Next comes server merges.

When that fails, it tries to implement a brand new fresh look/gameplay aspect. While this sometimes creates the illusion of population, in truth, it's a quick infusion, a shot of adrenaline, but not a cure.

When the fresh aspect ploy fails, people, except for a few die hard fans, stop playing it all together. Unless the company has other products to fall back on, they'll go under. Often, they'll go under anyways, since a subscription-based MMO is generally a primary source of income

WAR is dying now? When'd that happen?
There are server transfers, because they've opened too much to begin with

Uh... why would they make it free? That's a terrible business move. It's an MMO, it's never going to be free. Only free thing about that game are the epics anymore, ****ing casuals ruining a once good game.

Let me present to you an idea.

    Casual gamers.

    Hardcore gamer.

I'm sorry, but honestly prefer the casual.

If you take ALL the casual gamers out of WoW, you take out the majority of its playerbase.

I am pretty sure that by the time WoW "dies", Blizzard's secret next gen MMO gets near its release.

    And then there's WoW2.
