Just a quick question, is it possible for the forums to be made wider? I have about 8cm (2 inches) of black on the sides of the forums. I run a resolution of 1600 x 1200 and the forum is tiny. Just a strip of colour in the middle.

Just if the forums could be made slightly wider that would be lovely.

Here is what it looks like to me:

Mine looks similar, but has a little less black space on the sides.

My screen has a larger width x hieght ratio than your's, so Im not sure why yours shows that much black area.

I dont think the mods can do much about it though without alot of work having to be done with the forum skin.

It's, again, because not everyone has that kind of resolution. I have similar thing at work (doesn't bother me though), but at home it fills almost whole screen (width-wise).
Changing it would probably require messing with entire layout, so I don't think anyone but admin can do something about it

Most websites are designed for a 1024x768 resololution, including this, because that's the most widespread one. If it were made to fit 1600x1200, then 9 out of 10 people would have to scroll sideways, which would be more inconvenient than 1 out of 10 people having black strips on the sides.

Have you not hear of variable width websites?
They will spread to fill a widescreen monitor and shrink to fit a small window half the size of a regular screen.

It's quite a remarkable aspect of HTML in that it is amazingly easy to pull of

I support variable width websites because with full screen browsing my window space is wasted but If I have a second program running I often have part of the site cut off.

No, I haven't heard, but there's obviously a reason why it's not widespread.

There's enough load on Jon, there's no need for changing layouts. The only thing you'd win with it is that you'd need to scroll less vertically... wow.

Actually the reason isnt that obvious to me since Vb defaults to fitting your screen width

You can ,but all that does is increase the font and image size. Not a good stand in for widening the forum layout

    No its the forum design.

Its fixed width. The width of each segment was declared in number of pixels so it will always be that wide. A variable width page declares sizes in percentage of screen width so that no mater what size the window is the page takes up the same fraction of space
