Hey guys. I'm new to the whole RTS and Starcraft thing, and I'm almost finished in the Campaign. I've started playing online and I can barely ever seem to win. Protoss are my favourite race, and I seem to have the most success with them, but the main problem I have with them is that their units cost too much to build a big army quickly. And I also have no idea what to build in what order, or what has priority. And also I'm clueless as to how the whole Gateway into Warp Gate and then porting them to your base thing works. Does anyone have any really good advice for a newbie like me to help me with these problems? Thanks. -DreadAlert-.
http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Protoss_Strategy tada! Websites like these are great for getting a grasp on the game because a whole post about how to play protoss would be very long and elaborate. One thing I definitely recommend though is to learn a solid build instead of learning the quick-win "cheese" tricks. It may cost you some wins early on but your play will improve drastically if you learn solid play first.
Just a simple build order that you should try: 9 pylon 12 gateway Cybernetics core Pylon Warp Gate research on Cybernetics Core Stalker The "9" pylon means that once you see the number "9" as your supply (while the 9th probe is building) you make a pylon as soon as you have 100 minerals. Same thing for the gateway. While the 12th probe is building, make a gateway. Continue to pump drones until at least 25-30.. or just continue to produce them so you can move them to your expansion. If you research warp gate, you can change your gateways into warp gates. Then, at any point, you can press "W" to access your warp gates and then choose whatever type of unit you want warped into pylon power. The units will cost the same amount of resources, but will warp in much more quickly.
-standard protoss opening 10 pylon, scout 11 or 12 gateway (depending on what u scout) assimilator zealot (against zerg and rushes) 12 cyber core warpgate and stalker pylon robo bay observer 3 more gateways
To use a warp gate, you select the unit you want, and then you must place that unit in range of a pylon (or phase prism), just like it were a structure. In about 5 seconds your unit will be warped in there and ready to fight.
Sirchicken, I tried your opening. And I by the time I got to building my 4 gateways, my base was attacked by Marines.
Well you don't go past 2 Gateways until you have scouted to see what the others are doing. I'm not saying that by the time your done building you could have 3 or 4 just not in the very beginning. Scout early to see how much gas is being built, in a normal situation if you see 2 refineries, assimilators, ect.. really early there is a good chance they will be going air. In which case you make want to go to a stargate first instead of the 3rd gateway. If I end up staying ground then I will have 3 gateways and 3 robotics facilities to pump out immortals\colossi. When I expand I normally will go air at that time and build it at the expansion spot 3 stargates.
