It seems I've run into a lot of elitist jerks in starcraft 2. Everyone acts like they are the best thing ever to set hand to keyboard. The culture of the community seems to heavily value league placement and winning matches above all other qualities of a player. This causes players to only post their winning games on youtube, only discuss ways in which they rock, and only badmouth their team-mates in 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4.

The main way you can tell people buy into this idea that league placement tells everything you need to know about a player is one thing: tThey make it a point to tell you their league.

Hi Suzina. I'm Jon, I'm a platinum leaguer. ;) Or was. Until battle.net started lagging like a 3-legged dog.

Hi Suzina - while I agree that elitism is a problem, I've seen some people who post detailed shoutcasts of games they lost on YouTube, trying to learn from their mistakes. As for league placement, it is overemphasized but is also a valuable way of briefly summing up the skills and experience of a player - e.g. if someone says they're bronze league and asks for strategy advice, you're not going to tell them the same thing as if they were gold league and asked for strategy advice. That said, as you get to know a player better I think there's a lot more depth to them - strats they favor, races they're good with, and so on.

happens everywhere. probably losers IRL. the internet, unlike the real world, is the place where you can selectively show only the times when you're awesome. so they do it to boost their ego.

Heh, yeah I was hoping this thread was going to tell me they cover SC2. They had pretty useful information on WoW, so that would have been great news.

Elitism runs rampant in pretty much ANY competitive game. It is the "my ***** is bigger than yours" part of human nature.

One thing I will note/throw back at you is that there is a difference between elitism and retaliation/defending oneself. I get verbally (textually?) abused online sometimes by partners, and at that point I will throw my league/rank back at them to shut them up.

.....of course, against those kind of peoples the odds of success are only about 30%. The other 70% don't shut up ;P

edit: And Jon, stop picking on 3 legged dogs. They can actually get around remarkably well!

Suzina, I suggest you steer clear of the early gg thread then.

Welcome to the forum, enjoy your stay as much as you can.

I'M IN DIAMOND AND HAVE A ZERGLING IN MY PORTRAIT THEREFORE I'M BETTER AT YOU AT EVOLVES.

Its funny in a game i played today in...in... diamond (i don't deserve to be there) me and another guy were both playing pretty badly and hes like "sorry for playing so crap i got lucky in the placement matches" and i'm like "no i'm sorry for playing so crap i got lucky in the placement matches"... then we were both like ":D"...i felt bad for crushing him after that :S

I've noticed this a lot of the sc2 official bnet forum, alot of "If you aren't Platinum or higher, your ideas are irrelevant" attitude there.

I was in silver before the account wipe, which I guess is good for me since I started in copper -.-

That kind of attitude was on forums since StarCraft II was first announced, unfortunately. The elitists did so much damage to their own reputations, people outside of that closed circle find it difficult to take them seriously.

Recently some wrote an article called "O Micro, Where Are Thou" on Teamliquid, and there were probably good ideas in there, but it was jammed pack with venom, random asides, personal attacks on Dustin Browder (who isn't even the main balancer), etc that the points got lost in the spew of zealotry.

i suggest u never go to TL.net then. 99% of the elitists in the sc universe are born from that site. even some of the mods are elitist assholes. theres a few exceptions of course but overall TL is a sausage fest of nerd rage and elitism.

LOL at TL forums. nothing displayed their elitism more than when they argued against MBS because it would let the noobs in.

Nah, wow players use gearscore to boost their ego. Doesn't say much about skill, though.

As for the topic of this thread: you're going to meet jerks everywhere. Both in games as in life. Get over it and enjoy both. ^^
