A lot of the times when writers compose a story, they'll start with a bunch of characters. Then a series of events happen. Characters die one by one throughout the story until the climax where the most important characters/antagonists die. This is where the story ends.
But if the story is too popular, the writer usually continues the story. But since practically everyone have died, (s)he would introduce new characters and/or factions so "keep the story going". Then the whole process of the typical narrative repeats itself over and over.

The above practice has been used so many times that we've lost count of it. From books to TV drama to Hollywood productions, we've seen it all. And starcraft's storyline is no exception.

This is what bugs me with sequels. Because so many new characters and factions are introduced, I often do not regard the sequel as a sequel. It appears more like a new story to me. Starcraft wise, Brood War gave us the UED, Raszagal, Artanis, and Duran, which had no appearances or mentions in Starcraft original. I personally liked UED (plus Dugalle and stukov), Raszagal and Duran. But I don't really like Artanis. Brood War's story is pretty good and attached pretty well from the ending of SC original.

So now I wonder if I'll like the new characters and factions that'll be brought into the Starcraft 2 storyline. I'll probably like the majority of them, since Blizzard is pretty good at getting players accustomed to new things in the game. It's just that there are so many stories out there that tried to "force" the story to continue by adding new characters, and I get pissed off when it's horribly done.

Well usually not all (or even the majority) of the charaters die. It's understandable to get attached to old characters, but without new characters, settings, relationships, etc. then things will get stale. Even the old, familiar characters we once new to us.

I'm looking forward to meeting the new faces and getting to know them.

Not only must there be new characters, but also new major characters.

I don't like having new factions as in an entirely new race, as that screws up the storyline. I don't really mind having new characters in sc2. I mean, it's been 4 years or so storywise since BW, you'd expect some more people to be introduced. It's always nice to see new faces. Plus, terran have hardly any characters left that were important to the storyline. DuGalle, dead, Stukov, dead, Kerrigan, infested, Raynor, disappeared, Duran, an SOB and a traitor/Xel. See what I mean? Not to mention the Zerg characters. All cerebrates were killed/crippled, the overmind destroyed, the only one that remains is Kerri. Protoss only really has Artanis and Zeratul left, as far as I can remember. You can't have a story with such few characters, so yes, I do like it when new characters enter the story.

edit: I had a mix up with Aldaris and Artanis. All fixed now.

I dont mind as long as the story has consistency and keep close to its opening morals/ideas/beliefs etc. i wouldnt like starcraft running off to far from the original story of 3 alien races struggling for survival and control of their lil universe, though i doubt the story line can change in lets say, "hey lets all be friends and play galactic risk instead, then we can have intergalactic cook out night each thursday and everyone brings their own cultures food to try, and on sundays we can visit Aiur's water moon and take baths together and catch some UV rays, how bout it guys??"

sure. as long as they dont suck. and can replace the old characters. maybe do even better than just merely replacing them.

Maybe we should sum all old factions and heroes from SC1.
    FACTIONS:
Terran: Confederacy (eliminated), UED (still exists but its pacified), Dominion, Raynors raiders, Kel-morian, Sons of Korhal (transformed to Dominion), Duran's Terrans
Protoss: Conclave (eliminated), Dark Templar, Fenix rebels (eliminated)...hmmm not many left
Zerg: Swarm, Renegades (eliminated) but they never had many of it

    HEROES:
Terran: Duke (KOA), Kerrigan (Infasted), Raynor, DeGualle (dead), Stukov (not sure if he's alive or KOA), Mengsk, Duran (infasted)....only 2 or 3 left- new heroes are a must
Zerg: Overmind (KOA), Zash (KOA), Duran, Kerrigan, Dagoth (missed)...new heroes are a must
Protoss: Aldaris (KOA), Fenix (KOA), Tassadar (KOA), Rashagal (dead), Zeratul, Artanis...new heroes are a must.

..I heard that Stukov was killed than infested or some wierd thing like that. Either way, the protoss need a storm of new people. The zerg characters never were that intresting, so they'll probably have the fewest of the new heroes. The protoss need a new..well...everything. After all, Zeratul wandered off. All that's left to rule the dark templar is Artanis. Maybe we'll see more female protoss.

@ Exterranminator, stukov was reincarnated, the conclave still exists (the are the ones piloting the MS after all) Kel-Morian was infested mostly, and daggoth is most likely dead since he combined with some other cerebrates to form the second overmind. which died.

Burkid- yes, I know but i'm not sure if this secret mission with infasted Stukov is canon (i hope not, this story sux). There is no prove that Moria is infasted (althouth there was a mission in BW when you was ordered by Kerrigan to infast as many command center as possible). And last one is Conclave- the last leader (Aldaris) was killed by Kerrigan, Artanis is rather compared with Dark Templars (while he's not a DT he was loyal to Matriarch and Zeratul), that same with survived Hight Templars.

aldaris wasnt the last leader. he was just a leader.
and after zerg forces succesfully assault a planet, there isnt much left with few exceptions, and i dont think Moria is one of those. im not saying the whole combine is gone, but they arnt much of a force anymore.

Dagoth may not have combined with the others, it only said he commanded them to form the new overmind. But if he didn't join the overmind then, he probably died when the overmind died or soon after, since Kerigan took over all the broods. Still, nothing was ever concrete. He may have hid or mutated.
