I'm considering buying SC: 1 (with Brood War) to play it again and get aquainted with the general structure of it. However when I last played it (3-5 months ago) it was filled up in the lobbies with crap like "TANK DEFENSE" and stuff like that. Are there real games, or is it not worth getting again?
It's always worth it. Just make sure you use the right lobby. Also, you aren't forced to play on b.net. Plenty of other servers out there, although most of those are filled with really good players. Most people who are new here make a topic like this. The awnser is always: buy buy buy! Lots of people here still play from time to time.
You can try iccup. But It might be the other extreme. That is.. nerds who play SC 24/7 and beat the sh1t out of everyone. Hell, even koreans are said to participate in Iccup, although actually playing with one is highly unlikely.
Lol. True. When I first started playing, my first games weren't on the Dutch server. Almost empty. I said to some guy: this is my first game here. He was like: yeah, mine to. 10 minutes later my base was a pile of torn apart goo. That guy must have been playing for ages already. XD
What is it about the Koreans that gives them their reputation? If it is a genuinely greater skill, then why should they (as a nation) have that greater skill? Where does it come from? Also, does this forum have it's own lobby (or server whatever it is called) where one could go to find games to play with one another?
There's a sticky topic for our hamachi thing in this board, Jasmine. Also: Korean players always tend to win the Starcraft finals at the WGC. Further, they have a freaking tv channel for broadcasting Starcraft matches. So in short: they take it very seriously over there. At least the good players. I believe it also did something for their economy, not sure. I could be confusing that with Dragon Quest. Oh well. That's where you'll have to start googling.
I think it is because how the game is treated in their culture, it's treated like a professional sport such as football here in the United States. So, naturally they will have players that are very dedicated and skilled at the game but it's not like they are inhuman or in a league of their own, they just win a lot of professional games and it's really big in their country compared to the States. This forum used to have its own lobby for games for Starcraft 1 and it's own bot to moderate the channel but nobody ever uses it anymore and the guy who runs the bot doesn't post onthe forums anymore and I'm not sure if he runs the bot anymore.
It cost like 20 bucks for the whole thing, very cheap, and it runs great on any computer these days since it's a decade old (like 20 centurys in the computer age)
As somebody else replied they have their own tv show, Koreans watch Starcraft matches they way we would watch baseball/football on tv.
