archon - n., a Greek word meaning "ruler" Apparently, archon is an actual word, and not something made up by Blizzard, as I once thought. Archons were supposed to be the chief magistrates of the Greek city-states, and was also used more generally as a word for "leader." I see some connections here. The Protoss Archon is like the "strongest" unit of the Toss, not in gameplay, but in history, thus similar to a sort of a chief or ruler, thus similar to an archon. The character you play in the Terran campaign is the Magistrate of Mar Sara (not sure) That's all I remember.
Pretty sure every name, aside from some Zerg... well all Zerg names are real. Zerg names are just mixed root words. Fashioning the suffix "Lisk" and moreso in SC2, "Ling"
archons have been used quiet a bit in scifi and fantasy, i think blizzard went with it because it sounds cool and powerfull.
I agree. I distinctly remember reading the word in a novel once... first thing I thought was, "z0mg SC TWOOO!"!
i disagree, in gameplay archons pwns everything mano e mano. except for the battlecruisers firing yamato. i have tried it years back, the archon can take any units in the game 1 on 1. ^^
