When does one call a game kiddy?

I hear people calling all sorts of games kiddy. Not just in real life, but also on the internet. Actually, especially on the internet.

When you ask a person to define kiddy, they often have little to say. You get stereotypes, which most of you are probably know of.

To keep this first post neutral, I will not yet give my opinion. Also no poll, at least not at this moment. I ask all of you:
What makes a game kiddy, if such a thing even exists in your opinion?

I don't think there is a video game that isn't kiddy I mean video games are just sophisticated toys and methods of entertainment.

I also find it funny that most of the time its the immature, insecure and younger people that call things kiddy more than adults do.

Alright, let me throw in a well known stereotype then. Maybe this will get a discussion going. I know I would respond:

Seriously? It is commonly used as a comment on certain games, to define them as only for small children.

    1. Going with that, wouldn't most sports and things like "monster trucks" be kiddy? :D
2.Most adults I know would just throw all games in the same bag. Labeled "kiddy". None of them are gamers of course.

Nintendo is called kiddy, because most of it's games are. By which I mean "shiny", colorful (bright colors), with flowers, cartoony/deformed characters etc. etc.

The mistake made by many people is assumption that these games are targeted exclusively to kids. I haven't played many of their games, but I've heard (from people whose opinions I respect) that there are many "kiddy" games which are great fun no matter how old you are. At times even, a kid wouldn't be able to understand them well enough to have as much fun as adults.

that is almost exactly what I thought. However, there is more to it then just that. Lots of people who use the term at games such as some Nintendo franshises, have never even played any of those games.

For example, I have played and bought the Metroid Prime trilogy. A fanatic shooter playing friend of mine labeled it as kiddy. I told him it was not the case, at which he replied that it was full of happy colours, and thus pointed at kids. Then he got owned by me: the age 11 and up rating, dark settings and me owning him in the multiplayer of Echoes... Excellent example.

Then he found F-Zero GX in my pile of games. Hehe, he was instanly defeated by the ai and finished 30th in the lowest difficulty. Owned by an age 3 and up game.
So new question: is a game kiddy when it is extremely easy?

Hey, those F-Zero games are friggin' hard! I'm not even touching that thing
And of course they never played them. They wouldn't want to be caught playing kiddy games, now would they? ;) Don't let it bother you, it's just another example of irrational hating to make oneself look better than others. The sad thing is that it's probably not a failed attempt in many groups

To answer the question: no. It means it's modern.

Games that are actually aimed at kids should be easier, but games overall are getting easier nowadays. It's not bad if there is a hard mode (that actually IS hard), or some other good ways to challange ambitious players, but sometimes you don't even get that. But I digress.

You can get a photorealistic game with lots of blood flowing that's way too easy and I believe there are "kiddy" (as defined earlier) games that'll make you smash more than one controller in frustration, so difficulty doesn't really have much to do with it imo.

So true. My friend kept complaining that Gears of War 2 in insane mode was to hard. ... Then I convinced him to look at Megaman 9. He never used the word kiddy after that. ;)

And to add to my way to big ego: I can easily beat all cups in GX and the AX tracks on master difficulty... After I had 2 years of practice. Now, years later, I still fail to complete some of the missions at very hard. Ow gawd, mission 7 makes me want to smash things. XD

By the way: the movie of the F-Zero GX mission, for those who never played the game:

    link

This is why Nintendo sellso so may controllers. Hehe. And this is just the easy way of beating it, so without getting the fastest time or anything.

Also: I post this, again, from my phone. So please tell me if the link is broken or the movie is bad, because I can and will fix it then.

youtube says the video is unavailable just so you know. I never did get to much into F-Zero. I played it on the SNES and I couldn't get past the first face so I just gave up. As for calling something a kiddy game, I agree with you guys that, what's a kiddy game today? In the past it was so much easier to define. Like I mentioned in a thread somewhere my fiance likes t play my little pony on our sega genesis. Now that is a kiddy game, but just because someone likes to play it doesn't mean they are kiddy. Case in point me! Hey it's fun to custom design your own pony then neigh to death that witch.

Anything that has more appeal to a child than you, and something you may be slightly embarassed to do.

^ Yeah I agree with the slightly embarrassed idea. ^

I've played really cutesy games and enjoyed them with no embarrassment. I don't consider them kiddy at all. Kiddy to me is a personal thing. For example, you wont "usually" see a sports gamer play Raganrok because of their personal perception of what kiddy is. Maybe it's what their kids play? Maybe little cousins? Then again, I play video games with my little cousins and I don't see them as kiddy, unless they play like... Franklin's ABC and 123's.

But of course, that obviously crosses the line.

    *facepalm*
Stupid youtube, search this, without quotes: "F-Zero GX mission 7 very hard"
A single race that was extremely hard to master and beat.

Many people have called the game kiddy, but just a few hardcore gamers can make it all the way through. And the emberrasment thing: never thought of it that way.

But what is being emberrased? Are you not feeling like that because you define something as childish? I think that argument is good, but is it really the source of the kiddy definition? I think Hodl pu comes the closest to the problem: little children play it. But why would you feel emberrased because of that? You still do plenty of other kiddy things then. Even eating a lolly would be kiddy then. XD

I would like to devide those into two categories. A series with those pre-fabricated parts, such as Pokemon attack animations and that Team Rocket song. And on the other side real anime such as DB or possibly Naruto and stuff.

The first could be defined as more kiddy then the others. However, people who never watch any of these... those people just see the drawn animation on the screen and go: haha, you watch cartoons! ... And then somebody gets ripped in half in DB. :p

    DragonBall. >_<

Not really good to let little kids watch that. At least not the unaltered version. I think they took away most of the gore in the American version, but that could be just my imagination. The original voices really are a big plus for me, much better then the dubbed version.
