Will units that were removed be kept in the game as models, for use in map making? I really hope so, since Blizzard seems to be keeping a few other non-buildable units in game for map makers...

Yes, but if I remember good, the new units, like the soul hunter will be available. I hope we will be able to play with units we haven't seen in the trailers either.

    That would be nice!
But I don't see this happening very fast, especially not a comeback of Starcraft 1 / Brood War units. They would have to completely rebuild the graphics of those units to make them fit into Starcraft 2.

Yes, and I have no idea if they will have time for it, especially if we want to play the game before 2010:)

If Blizzard doesn't I hope it's only a matter of time before some modding community makes the models

Well if you want SC stats you can edit them yourself...

I just hope they have the DTs with the classic warp blades.

It shouldn't be that long before there are SC1 mods. Hell, there are WC3 SC1 mods so there will certainly be SC1 mods in SC2 since it would be so much easier to do.

I wonder if there will be WC3 mods. I think its pretty likely. It would be nice if it wrere easy to make heros with the editor, although not great for actual games, heroes are quite useful for making custom maps. Since custom maps and UMS maps were always my favorite part of SC and WC3 I hope they are even better in SC2.

There don't seem to be many mods for Blizzard games, at least when compared to other popular RTS games (Homeworld, C&C, etc).

    I wonder why...

I could not see Blizzard releaseing Starcraft 2 a super advanced game without the original game units playable on the maps of starcraft 2. Kind of like when you buy the new Return to the Castle of Wolfenstien, you also get for free a copy of WOLF 3D which came out for MSDOS. It would be really cool if they had like a seperate game for Starcraft "ONEHALF" where its the graphics with the old units of BW

@Shadowdragon, are you insane!!! Do you realize how many different and very original mods there are for SC and WC3. I'm not even talking about simple mods to change the gameplay of the RTS I'm talking about mods that have nothing to do with RTS's. There are litterally hundereds of UMS maps and Custom games for those two games. The range in genre from tag games, to dodge ball, to tower defense, to DotA type games, to Hero areanas, to RPGs of all kinds, to the THING and Murder in Mansion type games. Not very many mods? Have you ever even played either SC or WC3 online? You have no idea how wrong you are.

Well I agree. Here in Hungary we have an own mod for us- the Huncraft. And just search in google for sc custom maps. You will find endless number of them. In fact, I don't really like them, but the whole game mods (like Huncraft) are interesting for me.
By the way, these arena or FPS like maps have nothing to do with starcraft. No offense, if you like them play them, but this game is an RTS...

Quanta: I don't think custom maps really count as mods. When people talk about mods, they're usually referring to modifications to the game's engine, or at least lower-level scripting that is not readily accessible in the game's editor.

    --

Fo®Saken: While they would have to rebalance unit's stats if they were to be included in the main game, all they would have to do to include the old units in the editor is come up with the appropriate models, sounds, and scripting. This is not likely to take up extra time for them, because they've probably already done this very early in development in order to test the engine before they got around to implementing the new units.

Yeah...maps and custom games aren't really what I was referring to...because those are maps, not mods.

I know a few people tried, but the only mods actually working, as I recall, are a gundam mod and a few editing programs.
