Crash on start

I'm not sure if there are any other threads like this one (because they all describe crashing after x # of games, inability to connect to servers, etc.), but here's my problem.

I downloaded Starcraft II (with the beta key from the gamestop preorder) and patched it all the way through. After I initiate the StarCraft II.exe shortcut, the game starts, but I only get as far as the Starcraft: Wings of Liberty loading page when I get the generic Vista "____has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution" response. I have no idea why SCII won't start at all. My specs should be up to par with Blizzard's specifications.

This is what battle.net says about my computer:
    "My System Specifications:
    OPERATING SYSTEM:WINDOWS 2.6.0.6002 (SP 2)
    CPU TYPE:AMD ATHLON(TM) 64 X2 DUAL CORE PROCESSOR 4600
    CPU SPEED (GHZ):2.42
    SYSTEM MEMORY (GB):3.248
    GRAPHICS CARD MODEL:NVIDIA GEFORCE 9800
    GT GRAPHICS CARD DRIVER:NVD3DUM.DLL
    DESKTOP RESOLUTION:1680X1050
    HARD DISK SIZE (GB):931.511
    HARD DISK FREE SPACE (GB):601.893"

Can anyone help me out here?

hey man, had the exact same problem.

    Seen a number of fixes:

    1. Uninstall antivirus/switch it to "game mode"

    2. Download the latest nvidia geforce drivers; they state "recommended for use with starcraft 2 beta" (i would start with this fix attempt)

    3. Rename this file as follows:

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Blizzard Entertainment\Battle.net

    to

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Blizzard Entertainment\Battle.net1

    4. Right click the .exe, go to compatibility tab, and click "disable visual themes"

I have heard of success using all these fixes, some people's only worked using fix 4, some had to use fix 3 etc etc.

So just try them one at a time and see if you get any success. I would recommend starting with the gfx drivers fix (seems to be the most common working solution)
