Hi all, my first post here so go easy on me :)

I've played StarCraft over the years on different mac's with different ISP's etc. I recently changed ISP to O2 and more recently decided to play StarCraft again. The first thing I did was set up port forwarding as I did with all my other routers in the past, then went online to play SC.

This is were the problems started. The main problem is that I am unable to DL maps, maybe 1 in 30 games I join it will DL and normally at a very good speed. If it does not DL the others normally boot me as I must be showing lag or something, but speed tests say I have 6.5 Mbps which is more than enough for SC.

I've done a little digging and the only thing I can come up with is that the router which O2 supplied is of poor quality and is not working correctly. But if thats the case why is it that I can host games okay!

All the maps I have apart from a handful, I've had to DL from the internet and host. I really want to join in other peoples games and not have to host all the time.

My connection is LAN, I'm using a apple mac G5 1.8 Ghz with 4GB RAM and Radion 9600 PRO graphics card and my router is an O2 supplied O2 Wireless Box II.

Any pro help would be useful and very much appreciated.

Hmmm, with Mac I really don't have much experience but there are a few questions I would like to ask first before trying to help you. The first being are you using a hard line (any kind of cable) or a wireless type of connection? What brand of router do you have? Do you have any similar problems with any other programs or games? Do you have any firewalls, proxies or other like programs?

I wouldn't call myself a pro by any means but I'll do my best to help.

But the most basic question would be Version compatibility.. I think people are currently in xxx .16 or .15 make sure that it matches your current sc version. Then only then should you be concerned with technical problems.

    StarCraft version: 1.16.1

    Using: Hard line

    Router: O2 Wireless Box II

No other programs or games to compare.

Firewall off [never used firewall on macs]. I do use little snitch but all settings are on ALLOW for StarCraft.

Any other questions let me know.

Personally I think its something to do with the Router supplied from O2, but I'm just taking a wild guess as I'm no tech guy.

Have you tried doing a direct connection from your modem to your computer? Does your problem still exist? If you have a sneaking suspicion that the router is the problem, we should just remove the router from the equation so that we can better isolate the issue. It may or may not be the router, it could just be your Internet service provider.

In any case, try running a trace route:

    For Mac OS X:
    Blizzard: Trace Route

Tried what you suggested and the file on the desktop is blank and terminal is coming up with – bad value for packet length

The router has a built in modem so I can't do a direct connection test. Not that I know of anyways?

Generally, even if the modem itself is wireless (mine is too), it'll still have a direct RJ-45 jack.

The O2 Wireless Box II has ADSL in port, power socket and 4 Ethernet ports.

No other sockets so no way of doing a direct connection, that I know of.

I think we was on the subject of avoiding the router and going straight through the modem. I'm not using wireless atm.

I was under the impression that your modem and router were one and the same.

I did some research regarding your O2 Wireless Box II. Log back into your Admin CP and follow this :

    1. Set "Port forwarding 27901" (in router configuration and in CCG options)
2.Turn "Send delay on"(in CCG options)

    Hope this helps!

    bump

Yes they are the same. Some advice was to go direct avoiding the router, which I obviously cannot do.

I'll look into the port forwarding that you suggested ImaGiNe.

Could not find any reference for port 27901 and blizzard or starcraft. And I do not know what CCG options are. Can you explain a bit further please?

From what I am reading, CCG appears to be Channel Control Group. Do you have any of those options in your router configuration page?

I sent O2 an email with my issues. Their reply was to set up an account with Tech Support for £15+ who will advise on port forwarding! I don't think they read my email whatsoever. As we know, if ports are not forwarded I would not be able to host. Hosting was not the issue I had. Just general playing other peoples games and Dl them was the issue.

I then called O2 and they said same thing. So I spoke to a manager and stressed that my issue was not something that can be resolved from portforwarding and that this was either an ISP or router issue which should not be happening; the manager agreed with me!

He then put me onto level 2 support?!

Level 2 support consisted of reseting router and setting up ports again, plus making sure my settings are correct on my mac. This did not resolve my issue.

Next advice was to run a diagnostics test on my router using the software provided with the router. As per normal, they do not run on mac. His advise was to get a pc to test router. I got my friend next door Paul, who's a tech wiz to run the app on my router; guess what... the app didn't even run!

Paul then proceeded to set up a spare ADSL2 router he had on my mac using O2 settings...

NOW EVERYTHING WORKS AS IT SHOULD :)

O2 have said that they have not had any issues relating to mine whatsoever. But then again, they have a diagnostics app that does not run and inconsistent and incompetent staff.

My advise regarding O2 broadband if anyone is interested. Get yourself a decent router and not the garbage they supply. Other that that O2 broadband is the fastest I've had in my area by far.

Just a general FYI always a good idea to go with a non-generic router such as linksys rather than the ones provided by the ISP. They're generally designed for limited use, i.e. browsing and often purposely block ports for gaming and P2P sharing.

TBH there's no problem with the router O2 provided regarding ports, P2P or browsing. The only two issues I've had have been downloading maps and lagging others out in StarCraft whilst in someone else's game, as a host it's been fine, so ports working okay. The second issue was that O2 do not provide an email port 25 except with your O2 domain email. Simple fix tho, just use port 26 instead.

But I still agree with what you're saying. I will always get my own router from now on. Just for the fact that I can get a router that has good recommendations and I can take bak to the shop if I have any issues. Trying to get your ISP to send a new router is like pulling teeth.
