Hey, so the opportunity to purchase a comp for $50 came up, specs below, can it play SC2 on minimum settings?

    Windows XP
    Pentium 4 - 2.80 GHz
    GeForce 6600 GT 512MB DDR 8X AG
    1 Gig Ram DDR

    Cheers.

    Addording to this:

    PC Minimum System Requirements*:
You Have XP so ok there.
Pentium 4 - 2.80 GHz is more them required so ok there
GeForce 6600 GT 512MB is the lowest card supported by Blizzard in that make of cards. But your 512MB graphics ram is a lot and that is more then needed and should help.
12 GB available HD space you should have
1 GB RAM you have. But putting a little more in till you have 2GB at least would help your entire system as well as SC2.
    DVD-ROM drive you should have.
Broadband Internet connection you eed obviously for an online game. But the single player can be played offline.
1024X720 minimum display resolution - not sure about this. You'll know if you have it or not.

    PC Recommended System Requirements:
You don't meet the these requirements.

So I think that $50 PC can play SC2 at minimum settings. And you should get enough fps to make it playable. A good buy if you ask me. For $50. Not worth anymore than that though.

And next time if you have any questions just compare your specs to the ones Blizzard provided in the link :).

My old computer is better than that and it's almost unplayable on Battle.net

The RAM is what's going to get you the worst. While the CPU and graphics card just make you have to use lower settings with lower FPS, your memory will make you have frequent stutters. I played the game with these stutters on 1.5GB RAM and every time I saw a new blob of enemies (I.E. when it's time to start microing) the memory usage would kick up and the game wouold start stuttering for a few seconds. Usually, the battle is already over or you've lost so many units due to a lack of micro that it might as well be.

The graphics for SC2 can be adjusted so low, that even bad computers can run the game.
Like said above, the only thing really required is sufficient RAM. I find 2GB to be just right (tried SC2 on a laptop mainly used for school)

I'm getting the same issue on my 2GB laptop. Once about 30+ units get on the screen, my fps starts dropping. In massive battles, it can drop as low as below 5 fps, though I only recall it being that bad when there's something like 60 marines fighting against a fortified base. Though I blame the issue more on my graphics, as the old family set this one has I doubt meets minimum requirements.

I've also noticed that just logging into the b.net and starting to play takes about 50% of my CPU, never checked to see what it comes to during large battles.

  6. How about this one? Here's my computer, which I got in 2005, and I'm assuming it will not run SC2. So my question is, what exactly do i need? I am hoping to just upgrade my existing computer and not buy a whole new one, and to do it as cheaply as possible. Any ideas? Your insight would be greatly appreciated.

Again, I'm not talking about low FPS. That has nothing to do with RAM and has more to do with CPU/GPU. What I'm talking about is, say, in a Mutalisk harass. I run my Mutalisks into the base. Okay, I see a queen. Stutter. Stutter. Normal speed. About five seconds went by where my Mutalisks had no command and they were either just sitting there or attacking whatever their AI told them to. Then, the FPS will be fine until the next stutter. This usually happens to be when I need to start microing. The FPS is fine because after the initial stutter my FPS goes back up to 60.

I'm glad I got a new computer :D Too bad that one can't use sound because of compatibility issues.
