This forum no longer lacks a Borderlands thread.

I've been playing it since it was released last month.

    I have a...
    Berserker lv50
    Soldier lv46
    Siren lv24
    Hunter lv20
    Berserker lv17

I don't seem to be finding as many awesome rare weapons as my roommates, which is annoying since I play twice as much as either of them!

    My gamespy ID is TenNeon.

I still have to get a copy. What are you playing it on? And more importantly: how's the cartoony style working out? I kinda liked the original realistic style better, but it was rumoured that such a detailed style proved to be to much for the hardware with such a big world. :(

I am playing a copy of the PC version. The UI makes it obvious that it's a console port, but there is a bunch of stuff you can do to pull it out of console-land.

A big chunk of why I got the game was for the style. It's not really "cartoony" in any reasonable sense. The textures are hand-drawn, everything has a black outline. That's about it. Of course, I'd be fine with it even if I thought it were cartoony.

The reason they switched to the style wasn't to tone down the requirements, but to "make it look more like the concept art" - in a very literal sense. Having seen videos of the original style (an uninteresting "10,000 shades of brown and gray"- style), I'd have to say I prefer the current look. It has a lot more character. How many other games can take an unaltered screenshot and put it on the front of the box?

    Making it less cartoony. ;)

But seriously, I basically meant that the whole "drawn" style doesn't really appeal to me. That might be caused by Prince of Persia (the last one) disappointing me so much. A platform game were you can't even die... Talk about everything going uber casual. So to follow along this line: please tell me that the difficulty is quite high. ^^

I'm really disappointed by most games I've played lately whenever it comes to difficulty. Most games I play are rpg's (or al least have rpg influences), and I always seem to find some combination of attacks with a 100% success rate within two hours or so of playing. Even in Oblivion and Fallout 3. I'm holding my breath for Dragon Age and this game.

I tried it with the line shader off. The change didn't really blow my mind or anything.

The 2008 Prince of Persia game looks like it was cel-shaded, which will give a much stronger "cartoon" effect than the lines will. Also, as far as I can tell, the textures don't have a hand-drawn look.

Borderlands will only be hard if you're fighting enemies that are above your level, or if you're playing with people in co-op. It will only be easy if you're fighting things that are below your level.

There are guns out there that are much stronger than average, but they're not guaranteed drops, and you still have to know how to aim =p

Sweet. Probably going to try it now. This sort of things are what they never tell you at those major review sites.

Some of the guns are a bit unbalanced...

I got a green shotgun revolver at lvl 20 and used it up until lvl 42. I guess specing as a gunslinger hunter contributed to its awesome power but it did take out a bit of the fun of finding new guns. However as i'm playing through with other classes this hasn't happened to me yet.

The style of graphics fit the mood of the game perfectly imo

The game is about co-op and loot, not necessarily balance :p.

Anyway, I have a level 50 Siren and would be happy to play/loot hunt with anyone that wants too. All I ask is I get the SMG spoils. Just message me on steam or otherwise if you want to play!

I like my Hunter. Bloodwing is pretty much awesome with an electricity artifact. I do a few complaints, namely sniping range (If I can see it, why can't I hit it?) and FoV (for PC). So, I'm using pistols (my bullets explode. I am pleased) and Bloodwing and killing anything in my path.

Well, a sniper is only accurate up to a certain distance. :/

No, I mean Line of Sight has a further draw than actual bullets. In every game, they fade out bullets after a certain distance (so it doesn't have to calculate a bullet flying through the sky), but it's just really short in Borderlands.

With the PC version there are a few tweaks you can do to the configuration files to fix FoV and other problems, such as only 4 lines of properties on guns etc. There is a guide on the offical Borderlands forums that tells you how to do these things, I suggest anyone that has the game for PC to check it out.

    http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=79043

To adjust FOV (Field of View):
    -----------------------------
    Within WillowInput.ini:

Search for [WillowGame.WillowPlayerInput]. Below the chunk of bindings, add the following:
    Quote:Bindings=(Name="F10",Command="FOV 90",Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False)
    Bindings=(Name="F11",Command="FOV 110",Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False)

You can change the keys (F10 and F11) to whatever you'd like, as well as the FOV values.

TIP: It's being reported that the FOV gets reset whenever you sprint in an online game. As a workaround, you can add the FOV command to one of your movement keys, like I have. Example - my MoveForward binding looks like this (my forward key is E):
    Quote:Bindings=(Name="E",Command="MoveForward | Axis aGas Speed=+1.0 | FOV 96",Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False,LeftTrigge r=False,RightTrigger=False,bIgnoreCtrl=False,bIgno reShift=False,bIgnoreAlt=False)

What kind of sniping are you doing, Fenix? I can hit things (that are ridiculously far away) with my Atlas Cyclops, and it has one of the best scopes in the game. I am inclined to say that "missing" and "bullets fading" are not quite the same thing. Guns in Borderlands are generally not as accurate as guns in other games. It's intentional, to make accuracy matter.

I'll test it out with longer ranges, just to be sure... but I am confident that bullets do not fade at anything resembling a normal range.

    --

Testing it out on the Salt Flats- I hit things with confirmed bullet marks at ranges where it takes me about a minute to run from point A to point B. So far away that I could barely see the impact even with the crazy scope. Trying it with rockets, I did find that I could fire at things that were outside rocket range, but it was stuff that extremely far away. It really oughtn't be a problem, considering there's no way to see what you're aiming at anyway.

I think: if you scope in on an enemy with the best scope in the game, and the aiming circle is several times larger than their whole body, and you can still, with luck, hit them, that's range enough.

    --

The rocket cutoff distance is shorter than the bullet cutoff distance. I was able to hit things with my Cyclops that were outside rocket range.

I haven't actually played the game yet, but how ridiculously fast can those people run? I mean, you can reach the farthest point a sniper can see in a minute? Real life snipers can hit up to distances of roughly 3 kilometers now, but see much, much further. So you character runs as fast as a car or what? :s

Hrm....Maybe I just suck at aiming? I just know that, for instance, I'm in the bandit camp in the main area, if I'm standing on the deck of the central building, I can't snipe the enemies in the, for lack of a better term, yurts. Even when the scope dot is on them....Idk, I prolly just suck at it.

I prefer my exploding revolver anyway :<

EDIT: @ Aurora - Yeah, you sprint pretty quick, but what gets me is the jumping. If I could jump in real life like the player in that game could, life would be interesting.

...call me a party pooper, but this game lacked depth in my opinion. Quests are typical of those encountered in MMO's, kill this, kill that, or gather this item, while character interactions are very limited to 'cutscenes' and initiating quests. I was into my 3rd hour and i decided to uninstall it. Prehaps the game was solely intended for the multiplayer experience. Well, back to Dragon Age and The Witcher.

It's an rpg man. What did you expect? Mario Party-ish mini games around every corner?

Also, I assume you didn't buy it if you just uninstall it that fast. Shame on you. If you didn't copy it: my apologies. However, it's pretty lame to buy 2 game for $60 and then stop. Watch a few video reviews first or something. At least that's what works for me.

Lastly, you should judge games on what they are, not on what they aren't. Borderlands is a mix between a shoot and an rpg, so judge it like one.
Or are you one of those people who play Mairo Kart and then say: oh man, this game sucks. I can't even tune my ride and put hentai stickers on it!!1! Or play Doom 3 and say: duh, it's a boring game without a story, duh!!1! You could have expected that from a remake.

So again: judge a game by what it is, not by what it isn't. You'll see that it's much more easy to appreciate them that way.

    Umm...
I think in majority of RPGs I play... yes, I'd expect just that.
