Blizzard seems to have gotten arrogant in recent years due to their success. The fact the tickets are so expensive, that they make such a huge event out of Blizzcon now and the fact they don't show at E3 anymore shows this.

I mean with tickets, travel fees, hotel, etc thats a lot of money just to go to a convention of a game company that might or might not show much information about their products.

Pancake, consider that the last batch of tickets sold out in 15 fricken seconds. There's clearly no need to lower prices.

Well, of course there is no need to lower them. I sure a lot of Blizzard fans would pay a lot more if they had to but I'm not one of them. I merely just expressing my opinion that Blizzard has become kinda blotted.

Jon gets a free ticket doesn't he? Being the admin of this site.

I don't want to go to blizzcon that bad.

  8. BlizzCons cost money. And, they seem to get bigger and bigger each year from what I hear and, on top of that, they're combining WWI and BlizzCon so that makes it even bigger and more expensive.

I, too, however, went through a phase where I believed Blizzard had gotten greedy since the WoW machine. But, since they announced StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3, I can tell the money we give them is given back to us in quality games, customer service and community support. Definitely much more than big companies like Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, or EA. Activision Blizzard is THE biggest game company in the world yet they still have love and respect for their fans and it shows.

You don't have to go to graduation, you still graduate. I didn't go to graduation either, of course I dropped out and got my GED instead, but still.

BlizzCon is always in California isn't it?

Tomorrow's announcement has nothing to do with BlizzCon tickets.

  14. Sounds exciting :D Too bad I'll miss it. It better not be a beta date! :D

Arrogance has nothing to do with it. They're only willing to spend so much time and effort on hosting a convention- they can only deal with a number of people that is much smaller than the number of people that would like to go. As has been mentioned, the tickets sold out in seconds. Some basic Economic theory suggests demand is greatly outpacing supply.

My Economics is a bit rusty, but I'll give a highly simplified example:

Let's say there are 1000 tickets available, and each one costs $100.
Let's say that there are 2000 people that would like to buy a ticket.
Blizzard opens sales, sells those 1000 tickets, makes $100,000.
1000 people are satisfied, as they got a ticket. 1000 people are disappointed, as they couldn't get one in time.

Same scenario, but with tickets costing $200
The extra $100 puts it out of the acceptable price range for half of the potential buyers.
Blizzard opens sales, sells those 1000 tickets, makes $200,000.
1000 people are satisfied, as they got a ticket. 1000 people are disappointed, as they couldn't afford one.

The difference between these scenarios? $100,000 that Blizzard could use to improve the quality of the convention for the 1000 people that purchased a ticket. In each case, quite a lot of people are unhappy about the situation, but for different reasons.

Seradin mentioned that he might even be willing $400 for a ticket on eBay. If there are enough people like Seradin, it may very well be the case that the natural price point for a BlizzCon ticket is four times higher than what they're charging! (Scalping exists because people can take advantage of artificially low prices, eating the difference between the natural price and the actual price.) If anything, Blizzard is being extremely generous about what they charge convention-goers.

    On other costs:
Think of it this way- if you can find a way to cut your costs in other areas- travel, room, food, miscellaneous expenses, you can easily save a whole ticket's worth. When I went to BlizzCon in 2007, I had my mom sort out the travel and room- this is after I showed her my own plan, and it was found to be lacking, in the order of a couple hundred dollars. Good planning can save you more than twice the cost of the ticket.

    "Information":
The extreme majority of people do not go to BlizzCon for information. From my experience, and I know this has been the case with others- it is actually easier to get the "important" information online than it is to get it in person. I actually missed the first/main Terran demo (they showed it twice) because I was in one of the panels, and was about 12 hours behind forum goers in quite a lot of basic information.
Rather than information, which, as you said, isn't guaranteed, people go to BlizzCon and other conventions to interact directly with other people who are interested in the same things they are. It's a place where there are a fifty people within spitting distance that can talk to you about things that are normally too obscure to bring up in normal conversation. With BlizzCon, that thing is, for the most part, WoW, though you can still find a lot more familiarity with other Blizzard games at a convention than you would get at any other gathering of that size.

Yes I agree with the above. But it means with the expensive tickets, the 1000 would be all rich people. And the poor would not even have a chance to be in the 1000. With the cheap tickets they'd have a chance.

But I do not think Blizzard cares about this. And I do not blame them. To them each customer is the same. And they need the extra cash to make the Blizzcon better for those who to get to go. Is it rick boy's event? No. But I think it's slowly getting that way.
