What do you think was the best strategic game and why. [please don't say SC or SC 2...]
I personally liked pikmin and fire emblem

Yes, pikmin was insanely weird. But I thought it fun to be the god of sprout-like things, leading them into life or death battles. It was great to breed your little color-coded veggie creatures by carrying back the carcasses of monsters and beasties you slaughtered. It was adding insult to injury, in mky opinion. Killing them then processing their remains into more of your army through some...onion-shaped...thing... It was fun, not terribly strategic. But you still had to gather up 30 pieces over 30 days. Unless you fail at life, you should have been able to do it. Sure, it was easy and a bit childish, but I enjoyed it thuroughly.

Fire emblem was more strategy based. You have units that specify in certain degress. they have their own weaknesses and strengths and must be balanced. You ahve to manipulate every strength and weakness of your and your opponent's army. You also need to manipulate you surroundings and position, and sometimes even the weather. I found using wit and power together was very enthralling. True, I had to replay many levels becasue I didn't do things right or I was just plain unlucky. all in all, it was a extremely good and I really want to get the one for the gamecube, Sadly, I am poor and have no money to buy it, so I haven't gotten around to playing to bloody thing.

Like it or not, my answer is SC. It is the best strategy game ever.

Now for a more interesting answer, next best games.

An old favorite of mine is Malkari. It was a turn based strategy game where your objective was to conqure the remeains of a destroyed solar system. A rogue star past though the system destroying all the planets and now forms a binary star system with the original star, Malkari. You have to colonize and conquer the astroids made by the destruction of the planets. You are 1 of eight parts of a larger faction and there are 6 factions. You have to optimize the resource output of your astroids while maintaining ground defense forces and producing more ground units. You also have to build, research, and design ships. The designing ships is based on fixed ship templates that you add moduals to. You have to think about the ships mass and energy use and gerneration and propulsion and defenses and weapons ect. Alot of the game is designing good ships. The rest is resource management and the deployment of forces, and also research.

The Total War series are also great games. The only one that I have really played a lot of is Medieval total war 2. This game is also very good. There is a turn based part of the game where you have to manage your cities and deploy your armies and there is a real time part for the battles. The fighting is the best part as you have to command your army in open field battle or in siege battle. Different factions have many of the same units but some distinct ones as well. The English for example have great heavy infantry and archers but lack crossbowmen and have no archer calvary, although they have decent heavy calvary. The Byzantine have probably the best calvary archers and also have great archers but don't have as good of infantry or heavy calvary. This is just to give you an idea of how the different factions vary as there are perhaps 2 dozen factions making up most of Medieval Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and even part of the Americas though none of those factions are playable.

Civilization games are also great. I played the first thrid and fourth versions. These games are all about the big picture. The deal with resource management of course and city management and expansion and force deployment and a great deal of diplomacy. Build, expand, trade, ally, and conqure: those are the objectives of this game. Waging nuclear war is also a great deal of fun although it really isn't worth all the trouble if you are playing seriously. It tends to make every other country hate you. Of course, if you are already at war with all of them any way that doen't matter.

"what is the best strategic game BESIDES SC?"
I'll have to pick those up sometime. They sound interesting.

Strategy game? Ancient Empires on mobile phones. It's pretty cool and it's real challenging. Not your ordinary strategy game.

When it comes to turn-based strategy game, I'd go for worms. Really cool graphics since Worms2 and they made it even better on Worms3D. It's a real whacky game and highly challenging although beginners can still be able to play it with ease.

Nethack, it is a Strategy RPG, no other RPG needs that level of foresight.
Also Heroes 3 is a true classic.

That's only Real Time Strategy. It seems many people here have been posting turn based as well (Fire Emblem, Civilization). Not a duplicate topic.
