The title is self explanatory, from the entire RTS genre which unit and from where would you pick as the best animated by your own standards?
I like the colossus animation because it radiates power and control. Even when it's walking it keeps its "head" from bobbing for the sake of accuracy, and when it changes direction its "head" only slowly follows it which gives it a more dramatic "slow but deadly" feel to it. To top that off, it's simply amazing how it climbs cliffs, it sort of hesitates as if it actually made fast calculations as to how to step up, keep balance, and which legs to focus power into. The animation suits the model and its possible physical attributes perfectly, and at the same time serves to build character for the unit, not just to make it move so it wouldn't be boring.
Haha, it's hilarious because this's the 'Other Games' section, and everyone's still talking about StarCraft2. Clearly goes to show just how awesome StarCraft2 is, however admittedly that's probably only the case because it's one of the latest, and we're all practically immersed in it. That said, my choice's gotta come from StarCraft2 as well, but nothing mechanical like others have said. Mine's gotta be StarCraft2's Queen. You always see awesome designs and animations for vehicles and the like, but it's so much harder to come across an awesome alien, not to mention how much harder it is to actually design and animate. The Queen actually looks natural as it's walking and moving around. Seriously, it's simply stunning. It's a shame that it's got a ranged attack now though 'cause it offsets its attack animation, but will hopefully turn out for the best once they fix it. The melee attack animation was slightly off its poised and idle stance, and because of that, looked fairly static. Otherwise, stunning. I've also got a fairly extensive list of animations I dislike, though none from any RTS's or even any computer games. There's the Oust ad with the CGI butterfly and cow that just makes me want to cry, the ad for Franklins with the piñata horse and god-awful lip syncing, and, worst of all, the ad for Modern with the two crows/ravens that was so terrible it gave me cancer. Lastly, there's Terminator1, which I just watched tonight. Watching that last scene I literally slipped off the lounge 'cause I was laughing so hard. Ah.... Good times.
really, this should be on the starcraft sections i dont know why but the dark templar's animation was kewl
Yeah I can't compare SC2 to anything really I'm not much of a gamer. *notices that Jack is banned* SC2 is the best! *waits for disagreement but none comes* Huzzah! :wubclub:
The BaneBlade from Warhammer 40.000 - Dawn of War. That unit is awsome.. a really big tank with 11 weapons ) ... and from SC i must say: the marines dying impaled by a lurker ))
While there are some cool units out there none seem particularly better animated than any others. The tanks roll along the gorund. The men run along the ground and the planes fly in the air. Superweapon buildings have interesting animations when they fire though.
or everything from the Lurkers, ^_^, from the sound it makes when it emerges from its egg, to how it moves with its 7 legs, to how it dies. =P the only thing that made me pause is its attack animation, im just not sure how it is able to psychically do that, but it is still very unique to me.
other than SC, I like the desolator, apocalypse tank, kirov airship, and chrono legionnaire from red alert 2, and the great bombard from AoE3
I would have to say the footman from Warcraft 3... I love the way he runs, attacks, dies and most of all defends. I love seeing heaps of footmen holding there shields out in front as they walk slowly in to slay their enemies.
Oooooo yeah, the desolator... There goes the neighbourhood.. Scorched Earth... ))) damn, i played RA2 long time ago and still rememeber some of deso's quotes
hahaha yeah Alex, and the resulting animation where they melted into a puddle of green goo was awesome too
I agree that right now the Protoss probably harbor the best and most complicated models I've ever seen from the RTS genre. The Colossus and Mothership are probably two of the best examples.
