Hey, as some of you know i have a friend beta key looking for a new owner, none of my RL friends are interested so i decided to let someone here win it :D

After many hours scratching the stubble and surfing the web i decided my competition to find a winner would be.

THE PERSON WHO HELPED ME PICK A NEW NOTEBOOK/LAPTOP TO BUY ....*cough*

Yeah its not very creative but i want to buy one for uni and not pay huge sums of money for something i won't be using for games etc *glares at apple*

    There are some conditions
    - It must be under 700AUD (Thats like $630 Yanky)
    - It must be able to run word/excel smoothly (Not sure if 1GB can handle that since most are stuck with windows 7?)
    - It Must have wireless internet access
    - I must be able to carry it up an insane amount of stairs every day

    Examples
    -http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Computers-and-Monitors/Notebooks-and-Laptops/HECQ61406
    -The ASUS eee pc
    - http://www1.ap.dell.com/au/en/home/...aspx?refid=laptop-inspiron-10&s=dhs&cs=audhs1

Also if someone finds a good laptop don't be dismayed because if you can find a cheaper price for it (including shipping) you'll be the one with the key (The Australian dollar is very strong atm so go hunting for a bargin!). DON'T SHOW ME SECOND HAND STUFF ON EBAY

By posting in this thread you agree that i have the final say in who gets a beta key!

If Jon finds me one he can give the key out to whoever he wants ;D

And I have a solution for you.

It's called the wifi or 3G ipad. http://www.apple.com/au/ipad/

"It must be under 700AUD (Thats like $630 Yanky)"
The ipad should cost less than $700 depending on which one you get. The prices in the US start at $499US.

"It must be able to run word/excel smoothly (Not sure if 1GB can handle that since most are stuck with windows 7?)"
You can get Pages and Numbers on it. They are Apple's versions of MS word and MS excel. And you can with those 2 apps save your documents in formats MS office will understand. And I'm sure it'll have even more MS office support too.

"It Must have wireless internet access"
The Wi-Fi version works wirelessly with Wi-Fi hotspots. And the 3G version which has Wi-Fi also, can work anywhere wirelessly.

"I must be able to carry it up an insane amount of stairs every day"
The ipad weighs only 680 grams (Wi-FI version) and 730 grams (Wi-Fi + 3G version). So that's pretty light. You can just throw it in your bag and walk up those many many stairs. Or you can even hold it as you walk. Either way it's pretty light.

    Plus:

The ipad is also an e-book reader. So you can get your textbooks (if your school has the option, I know many already do) in electronic format and read them on the ipad. And no need to lug your many heavy textbooks everywhere with you always. Apple will announce when the ibooks store will be available in Australia.

And I know you don't want to play games on it. But if ever you wanted to one day, you could as there a lot of games planed for it's release.

Also it can sync to Windows PCs and Apple computers. So if your main computer is a PC, there's no need to worry. All you need is W7 or Vista or XP with SP3 on your main PC computer and a free download of itunes and you're set to go.

I know the ipad is not a typical netbook. And not the most obvious choice for an answer. But it suits you needs just perfectly in the price range you stated in your post.

The Apple ipad. Coming out late april. Preorder early April in Australia. So there's a little wait if you choose this as your prefered option.

    ****************
But in saying that you might want a PC netbook too. As I think most serious notebooks cost more then $700. But if you can find one that suit all of your needs that for most things would be as ok too. So you have a choice there. And I'm sure others would steer you to a good PC netbook to look at.

And since you're an Aussie like me, you should take a walk into your local JB-HiFi store. They have a decent range of PC's to chose from in your price range. I'd steer clear from the Apple section. As the ipad is not out yet and the rest of their range is not really meeting your requirements expecially price. Mind you when the ipad is out they will probably be selling them. Also that might help you in choosing if a PC netbook is what you are after.

    ****************

And yes I'm an Aussie too. I'm a Queenslander.

And lastly if I get your beta key I'll give it to soemone I think will do a lot of testing and help the SC2-forums community. If I am to get one I want to get it from the opt in.

    @ Marine,

Just an FYI, none of the PCs anyone linked above will play SC2. Period. You need to stay away from graphics accelerators like the Intel 4500HD for now.

I don't know if you are looking for something that will play SC2 or not but here at the two laptops I have for you.

Will play SC2 but slightly outside your price range (try searching AUS stores for this model number?):

    http://www.amazon.com/Pavilion-DV6-...-Laptop/dp/B002ONCBX0/ref=dp_cp_ob_pc_title_1

Same PC for a little cheaper that probably won't play SC2 but is in your price range (still a good PC just doesn't have a great graphics card):

    http://www.amazon.com/Pavilion-DV6-...ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1269373156&sr=1-1

Here's one that might be harder to find but is REALLY cheap and will run SC2:

To JonX. The original poster said that. So judging by that he does not want to on the whole play games on the machine. So we can link computers that will not play SC2. The original poster said nothing about wanting to play games or SC2. Only you are saying it.

Plus the whole "want to buy one for uni" makes me think the computer will be used for study purposes and not games. The original poster might have another computer capable of plauing SC2 and this 2nd computer could be just for taking to the university. All I know is what the original poster said in his post.

    Hi,

My post has not appeared here :(. I included a link to Lenovo Australian website so you could buy:

    Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 - 2957K6M (Black).

The price is AU$649.00 without shipping which will make it around 700 with the shipping fees.

    Hope I win the key.

    Thanks.

You linked US dell here in Australia we are forced to buy more expensive inferior products off dell. If they shipped me the US version/price you'd win :p

    @Spardas
One of those was in pounds...
Another one you linked didn't have the price but i googled and found they all were around 1000
The Acer is nice though, might be a tad too costly (Was that in AUD?)

    @the8thark
I'm not sure how typing would go on that. The ebook thing for textbooks sounds interesting but i havn't heard anything about that from my uni. Touch screen makes this a no. (It also looks a bit bizzare tbh)

    @Jon
I really don't want a laptop which can play games since thats instant fail uni :D. I like the pavilion but the website you linked doesn't ship to Australia i think.

    @Sarahk
Seems a bit overpriced comparing it to other products similar to it.

You can try more than once so keep at it!

    New condition
Make sure the website you link ships to Australia and tell me what currency its in if it isn't clear on the website...come on work for this key :p

Sorry but it comes with Vista and weighs 2.9kg (Weight under 2kg is preferable). Not worth the price

    Marine,

I've found the same laptop models in Australian stores but they all seem to be much pricier than the US version. I would suggest buying it from the US site and shipping it to Australia.

Also, the dollar conversion between the US and Australia is about 1:1, the US dollar is not worth more in Aussie coin.

    http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/au/en/ho/WF25a/321957-321957-3329744-64354-64354-4041735.html

OR you could buy it on eBay in Australia or on the US site(they have new ones on there):

Hey there man. I was looking for it and found two more you could be interested.

    http://www.computeronline.com.au/notebook_2.php?C_ID=70&S_ID=400&PROD=28234

Well, im going to sleep now, its mid night here! I will try to look for more options tomorrow.

By the way... 1GB is enough if you are going to use excel, word and internet. Its really enough.

Do you have any preferences between Windows XP and Windows 7?
If you give me some kind of directions, like "i hate ASUS" or "Ill not buy any ACER" it could help a lot =D

I use to work with selling desktop computers years ago. More tips would really help, so i can try to give you a the "best" bang/buck (is this right in english? :p).

Well, like i said... will try to find something tomorrow when i get home!

    See ya!

Well for typing on that, you have the virtial onscreen keyboard that is just there when you need it. Also you can buy a wireless physical keyboard and dock. A picture of this is here. http://www.apple.com/au/ipad/accessories/. So you have the option of onscreen virtual keyboard or real wireless keyboard. Ans also you can a stand for it so the ipad can be nice on your desk. Like this.

Also you can get one of many many cases for the ipad too. So you can protect the thing at all times.

So lots of options for you. Sure the ipad might not be for you. But it's nice to get lots of information to help you make your choice yes? :D

    *****************

And if you get a PC laptop from the US or other non Aussie place jsut remember their power outlets from the wall might not be the same as ours and you might need to get a little power adapter so you can charge your computer correctly from an Aussie power outlet.
