One that's slightly better is rendering as i type. It'll be done in about 40 minutes. I would have made a longer one first but it takes a long time to render. I will set up a longer one with a real environment and let it render while I am asleep. Hopefully there will be no mess ups during that time.

Paragon, do you have any idea how many polygons the average unit has in SC2? Or, more specifically, the Cobra has? I'm working on a little project right now that might be beneficial towards the forum and could use your input on this. Thanks.

Best I could do is a manual count of where the polys seem to be. Textures can sometimes do a good job of making the poly count seem higher than it actually is though. What's this project?

And here is the slightly improved video:

    Same length unfortunately

The new rendering looks wonderful. Great job!

This project is just a time killer and sheer amusement. I'm thinking of taking some of the unit designs that ppl have been complaining about and, based on their critiques, create a remodel for such units to have 'em take a look at what their suggesting in physical form.

I'm not saying these are necessarily better than the original, but I will attempt to make 'em look as good as possible.

I basically see many ppl offer advise and input on what a unit SHOULD look like verbally, but since I have the software to do it, I figured a picture definitely equals 1000 words (but no minerals tho :( lol) in this case. So I figured I could have some fun with it.

What do you think? You wanna join in? :D

Oh, and lastly, may i ask for the polycount of your Banshee as something for me to go by? I heard from someone that the polycount can go as high as 10,000 for like the Thor or something and that just sounds insanely high. I take a look at the cobra and feel like it could be done in less than a 1000 for sure. All the crevices 'n details look like they're very texturable.

I actually thought about doing that once a while ago for some unit but then I figured people wouldn't like that one either. And even if they did like it better Blizzard would never consider using it. Reasoning behind that being that they would be afraid someone would try to claim it as their work although I think there is something written somewhere that basically says Blizzard would win any battle dealing with stuff like that.

10,000? Definitely not. You are correct in that that is too high.
As for the cobra. They could pull that off with 300 polygons. But I would say average would be around 500.

Whoa, nice job there Paragon.
That looks way better then the current Banshee attack. Hopefully, Blizzard will implement something like that in the final version.

Sweet d00d, thanks for the feedback. 500 sounds about right.

Yea, u'r right there, Ych9. The Banshee would be so much more of a unique unit if its attack left like, a trail of pure destruction as opposed to isolated bombs here 'n there.

And as far as Blizzard's copyright laws... ummm... I sincerely doubt anything we do should or really can threaten their progress or ultimate decision making. But at any rate, I hereby state in this thread I will not sue Blizzard cuz I love them all too much; even if they replaced the new Raynor portrait with my beautiful Chinese face. That's right, I said it.

make the banshee move faster.. that would be better. or maybe not coz they are intended for ground attack.

make a predator, make it travel ultra fast shooting LASERS! 8)

modelling a sub 300 poly cobra currently
edit: nevermind, the guns take up more polys than expected. Cobra is around 450

Omg, me too! I can't wait to see it. I hope I can keep it under 300. Is it gonna be all tris? Cuz I haven't had much experience with that. I just hit triangulate at the end of it all; which would undoubtedly shoot up my poly count. Oh man, this is gonna be nuts.

Let's see how we do shall we?

Haven't finalized proportions or finished the back but I'm tired now so I'll do it later. As of now it is 458 triangles. Will probably be around 475 when I'm done.

Also too tired to set up a scene for the banshee tonight too so I'll do that before I leave tomorrow.

might as well upwrap it and do some texture magic when I finish it though...

Wow, nice job, paragon. Good luck on your project too, ArchLimit. Powerups for both of you. But this thread turned too professional for me to follow. :p
