The Starcraft series has pride itself in balance. I think the recent games and statistics suggest that there does not exist this "balance" in its current stage. Although some may argue that specific races have not figured out the counter to certain builds and it will be worked out over time. It does seem to me that we only have 1/3 of the final product available and we are often quickly jumping to conclusions. What do you think? What race needs to be rebalanced? Which units need to be reexamined? On a sidenote, if you want to take a look at the international tournament held in the last few days, I have posted a good number of videos along with some talks about the gameplay. Judge for yourself. Also looking for suggestions and ideas to make things better. Thanks.
I don't see the connection between balance and the old 1/3 game argument. Also, for the latter, you're going by what other games (and SC) do, present all the aspects a game has. Well what about, say, simulators? Surely the ones that do not contain trucks and buggies don't qualify as a complete game? But they do... and so does SC2. As for balance, I just watched the epic Idra v drewbie game commentated by HD and that hints at imbalance as well, in favour of Terran... and then Zerg proceeds to pummel Terran... so yeah there are too many facets of SC2 to judge balance after such a short time after release.
Take a look at the numbers... http://www.sc2ranks.com/stats/league/all/1/all despite protoss being favored over 4 divisions, you fill find that the win percentages within each division are very close. So basically, the numbers do not suggest any sort of wild imbalance. Minor imbalance, things that require small tweaks here and there... sure.
Actually at such small differences I don't think it's safe to assume they're imbalances in the game - it could very well be less/more favoured strategies/tactics paired up with other strategies/tactics that counter the original ones to varying extent. Then there's player skill... I would consider those numbers balanced. Maybe if there was a 5% difference then we could look into balance seriously.
I think it is too early to say if any race is inbalanced. People need to learn to play (I remember in sc1, few years after release people were still developing some new great builds/strats). Assumptions about overall balance will come anyway imo
