I know there's already a thread about this but I can't find it right now. As I understand it, spiders are used by search engines to mark web pages for quicker access.

I believe kuvasz is right. From what I know, spiders are used to allow a search engine to quickly find a web page. That way, when someone uses the search engine, the search can be done a lot quicker than if it was done without spiders.

That's how yahoo and google can find millions of web pages in less than 1 second.
