My First Post so be nice I have just watched the battle reports , and am realy looking foward to the game being released. But and it's a big BUT , The zerg seem to me to be realy realy weak ! both Terran and Toss beat them so easy in the reports and im realy worried (as a Zerg Player) as to the Zerg battle prowess in the new game . They just didnt seem to have any answer to the terran or the Protoss in both games i watched. Even David Kim Lost using the Zerg . I would like to here your thoughts on the subject Happy posting.
There's been lots of talk about the zerg, and about how the game is evolving, etc. It's hard to say whether the zerg really are weak or not. Maybe David Kim just doesn't play zerg very well. There's few games played and no AMM yet to do win/loss ratios between equally-skilled players. Making matters more complicated, Battle Reports aren't just random games, they are selected for a variety of reasons, the most important being a certain length. For all we know, Kim keeps beating his opponents in less than six minutes with zergling rushes, but those games don't appear as Battle Reports because they're not fun enough to be displayed. In my personal opinion, zerg aren't so much weak as having a weak period during the game. Zerg seem strong early game, mainly due to banelings (are they still tier 1.5?) and zerglings are pretty good too due to new pathfinding. (However, zealots pwn zerglings worse than they did in StarCraft I. I'm not sure why, the stat differences are minimal. And for whatever reason, the zerg always seem to get zerglings after other races get their first combat units; in BR 2 the terran player got a marine into the zerg base before they had any zerglings, but we saw the zerg player get 10 zerglings and a queen out in a very short period of time. In other BRs (and BlizzCon matches) vs zerg, the enemy player usually starts killing drones or interfering with building production before the zerg player gets any zerglings out.) Zerg can also do very well in early game due to the queen using Spawn Larvae (sometimes called Larva Injection). They did so well with this at BlizzCon 2009 that people got scared and started calling the race (or just the queen) overpowered. But by tier 2 zerg are quite weak. They don't have any unambiguously powerful units which can be used to fight their way through choke points or just destroy bases. The roach is, IMO, the real problem here. It's much tougher than any other zerg unit of its tier, but it has low base damage and does bonus damage vs either light or bio (depending on which source you're using). Blizzard also keeps nerfing its regeneration ability and increasing its hit points, a direct counter to the original "kill it with focus fire" roach; I presume there are balance reasons for this, but I don't know what they are. As you probably noticed, the zerg get good map control and often dominate in very early game due to this but almost never successfully assault an enemy base; the best they can do is slip some units in and kill workers (not a bad idea by any stretch, but units like reapers can often do this better). Other races have tough units (eg zealots, marauders) to fight their way past zerg choke points and win the game.
Kimera757 you make very good points , i guess im just worried , and i'm sure they will get it right (i hope so anyway) I never was much good with Terran (though they look great now) And i used to do ok with Toss , but the Zerg were closest to my heart , just gotta love the mass Ling An Hydra backed up with a few Lurkers and Def's charging into the Terran base ! Happy days . Come on Blizz get this game out ! LOL
What I've always found is succesful in games that I am Zerg is massing Hydra's, and owning everyone with them, it's surprisingly easy, especially if I'm versing a Zerg, I can just Nydus Canal in. Hopefully the Zerg are a little more powerful in Starcraft2.. Also, Nydus Worm seems to be an interesting mechanic.
I think Blizzard is wanting people to get away from the usual rushing with zerglings then later massing hydras to win. Because to me in SC1 many on the other Zerg units were really under powered. And I think Blizz in SC2 is trying to make a zerg army where to matter what units you have lying around, they all are capable of a decent offensive. I have to agree with the above for me. it still seems the Zerg are the most powerful as soon as they get hydras. And power them up. Add in the new queens and banelings and they can do some really good early/midgame damage. Maye they are making one race good at rushing and one good race good at turtling. Sure you can do other things with said races but it'd take a little more skill to pull it off. But you'd have the element of surprise too.
as far as I'm concerned, the Zerg is currently the race experiencing the most tweaks and balance corrections by the Blizzard team. So you may be right: They might actually have been a little weak before, but rest assured Blizzard is doing everything in their power to fix the balance issue. (hopefully, but hey it's Blizzard we can always count on them) Also where did you see David Kim play as Zerg? I believe david is a terran/toss player at heart, if you really wanna see someone literally own every opponent he faces in less than 10 mins (even in finals) with the Zerg, that someone is Jaedong (obviously, another korean). He is sweet, fast, and deadly.
it was so long ago that we got to see the zerg in battle so i'd suggest there are some changes in gameplay for sure
