Hello, I can use some help here. My game arrived today, and at first, I encountered the famous "update loop" problem. After tried multiple suggestions in the FAQ post, I gave up and accepted it as the problem caused by the strong firewall of the campus. Then I went home, and of course the update can be completed successfully, and I was able to play one quick match at home. Now return to the campus, although the game can be launched, I still can not access the battle.net (as I expected). And unfortunately, I did not go through the offline procedure at home, so I am not able to play offline here, either. So, my question is (AT LAST!), is there anyway to bypass the firewall of the campus, so I can connect battlenet? (just once will be enough to make offline play possible).
Read the thread "Starcraft 2 requires a patch"? In this long thread, a method for bypassing the firewall using wowtunnels is described. If that method doesn't work (because SSH is locked won on your network) you are pretty screwed. In all seriousness, either ask your IT department to make StarCraft 2 playable by at least opening the TCP ports (then you could patch via port 80), or move off campus. I hate solutions like this, but that's one of the hard knocks of collage campus life. Find some guys who play WoW and see what they've done to bypass it (if you can find anyone). Chances are the wow guys are using wowtunnel too.
Thank you for your suggestion. I went through everything listed there, but still no luck. What I hate most is that offline mode is not working properly right now, I can not use offline mode in campus even I connected to battlenet at home yesterday. Guess I have to wait blizzard solve this offline problem.
No, it is not Blizzard's problem, it is your collage campus. Redirect your energy at them. Did you try connecting to wowtunnels? So long as you can establish a connection to them, then your golden. If you can't, then you need to talk to your IT department, maybe even start a movement on campus to get the networks settings changed. Welcome to the hard knocks of collage campus crap internet.
External proxy should handle with any firewall, like: http://your-freedom.net/ If you can browse www, technically you can connect to any game with it. The problem may be response time, but I think that as long as it is billable, it may work fine
I've heard a lot about people on campuses having problems. Does anyone know why that is? I'm behind three hardware firewalls and when I patch and windows says "Blizzard Downloader wants to open a port" I always say no. But I haven't had any trouble patching or playing. So its strange to me that there are problems on college campuses. The one thing that did happen to me was that I registered the game during the install, and then after it was patched, I restarted and also rebooted my router, just in case. This screwed something up and I had to use the "repair" application before I could login. Which I guess is just because of some weird copy protection. But not being able to patch at all, does anyone know why that's happening?
The problem stems from collage campuses locking down their networks for file sharing. Blizzard's updater is simply a Bittorrent client that uses old BT default ports! No campus in their right mind is going to allow Bittorrent to run (Stateside) simply to eliminate liability of idiots like the RIAA and MPAA. The only collage I saw that had a decent solution to this problem is Clarion Collage in Clarion PA. There you can pay your own money to get DSL into your dorm room. I think all campuses in the US should allow a choice in Internet, and you shouldn't be forced to pay an IT fee for sub-par internet that doesn't meet your needs!
Sure sure, but the Blizzard Downloader doesn't have to use bittorrent. I mean maybe it worked for me just because I say no when windows asks to open ports and otherwise the downloader hangs there.
Yes, you can disable the BT stuff on the downloader, however a few ports still need to be open, and most network admins solution to stopping "bad" things form happening on their network is to lockdown almost all ports except for 80. SC2 is a new game too, and its a new year. Its best to go to your IT department and ask them if they can make StarCraft 2 playable on the network. They should be able too. If you don't bring the issue to their attention, nothing will ever come of it.
