Any maps without natural expansion?

    Hi,

Im quite new to Starcraft so in case you wonder why my question seems strange =)

I read on the newly updated starcraft2.com that there will be many natural expansions per player in 1vs1 maps.

    Question 1
Are there any maps that dont have natural expansions? Are there players that dont want to play on maps where you dont expand to second base?

Reason for asking is that the game becomes simplified if you only have one base to take care of. And those kinds of maps would be more casual friendly for people like me and I think i would have better chance to win/play on those maps.

    Question 2
Is natural expansion something that a player should aim for in a 1vs1 game? The question might seem silly but i was wondering if expanding to second base is an advantage over a player that chooses not to expand?

Hmm, no, zerg need the expans. Starcraft is about multitasking, micro, macro,
1 base is boooring, if you want that go play WC3 instead and concentrate on your micro.

    Hey Baso.

There will be a practice league for people to play in on battle.net. The overall speed of the games will be somewhat slower, and the maps will be designed to make rushing harder. The maps will have expansions though, since expanding is a big part of Starcraft's gameplay. But because of the friendlier pace of the practice league you will eventually learn to maintain several bases at once.

But if you don't feel like learning that then don't worry, 'cause there's the map editor with which you or any other like-minded person can make maps with one base per player. No matter how you feel like playing Starcraft you probably can, thanks to the editor.

To answer your second question; it depends. In general it's an advantage as two bases have double the income of one base, but taking over an expansion is a risk because what you spent on new structures your opponent may spend on offensive units to take you down with. But in general, expanding is something that is done in essentially every game of Starcraft, and you should try to learn it as it will make playing RTSs way more fun.

A natural expansion is not necessarily a expansion right outside your base, it is the expansion that you are most likely to go first or will expand to "naturally".

There could be a map with expansions only in the middle on islands but one of those could be a natural expansion.

I think there will be no official map without expansion. You can create a map yourself once this game gets released. By default the minerals have 1,500 of value, so you could change them into 20,000 for instance.
That will allow us to create a strong base, safe and build all units from there.

    Welcome to the forum !

Not that one base is always safe, but it would be fun to try it sometime.

Still, I just played the cpu. Free for all, 8 opponents of all races and me as Zerg.

So much fun to have 5 bases in the end. Starcraft just isn't the same without expansions.

And for the more serious players: yes, I was messing around. Could probably have won already with 3. It's just way to much fun to take choke points and then send wave after wave of Zerglings. Those poor Marines. ^^
