I was wondering what new kinds of strategies would be good for fighting cheaters on battle.net I mean its obvious that replays don't work in these cases because hackers can glitch the replays. I was thinking that blizzard could have people monitor one out of maybe 10 games to see if they spot a hacker. If they do then they can immediately ban the person. Or give the players a better ability to combat cheaters. I mean it just gets irritating when someone hacks in a game. They ruin it for everyone else and it only shows that he can't play the real game. Hackerz in my opinion are the worst scum on battle.net and I really want to see some new more improved method from blizzard to catch and delete them. Another Idea is make it where they can only have 1 name per cdkey. Its just annoying that a hacker can simply change his name to avoid being banned by other players.
How does that solve the problem? It just supports cheating. Personally I would feel better if cheaters were just banned and/or shot.
They've already made it quite clear that battle.net will be completely revamped for SC2. Trust me when I tell you that this will be a MASSIVE security update. Threats will have a hard time coming in and I would expect it to be on the same timeframe if Blizzard upgrades battle.net and then leaves it like they pretty much did for Starcraft. Hacks will at LEAST take a couple of years to catch up with the game, and hopefully Blizzard has some ideas as to how to stop these from happening. Punkbuster (for other games) has been a huge step in the direction of limiting hacks. At the same time, features like this allow game makers to become a little bit greedier in making their product more expensive since its just about impossible to crack.
I just think It would help if blizzard made it easier for players to report hackers. I mean theres more people trying to make cheats for battle.net then there are trying to prevent them. Its just annoying that people can't learn to play the actual game instead of hacking. But a good idea would be if blizzard placed random *moderators* in random games to try and spot hackers. If they do then they just boot him off battle.net forever.
Unfortunately if you appoint players to become "Moderators" who aren't paid and can't be punished for their actions, favoritism always becomes an issue at some point. Better to stick with automatic defenses against hacks and stick with it. As to reporting hackers, it just becomes a series of endless leads. You might find one or two actual hackers among the thousands of claims of hacking you're going to get. Think about it, a new starts play StarCraft II, sees a move he doesn't think is possible and therefore reports it to Blizzard who then has to go and make SURE the other player isn't hacking. They may be able to sort out most of these reports, but that still takes time and the ones that make it through will still have to be investigated.
what about the idea of having blizzard employ moderators to actually go into games and spot hackers. Like US air marshals do on airplanes. They disguise them self and if theres a hacker they take him down.
Blizzard monitoring random games isn't a practical solution. It just would not be worth spending the resources necessary for that kind of thing. With the millions of online games that will be played, it will either take way too much money and people to watch enough games or their monitoring would be spread so thin that it would make little difference. The best thing they can do to keep up with hacks is to identify new exploits and patch the game regularly. I agree with the idea of allowing only one profile per CD key.
