In the midst of all these threads about units and the lot we have forgotten to take time to appreciate one of the rather unnoticed features, Doodads. The level of detail and enhancement in this area of Starcraft has from what I have seen in screenshots incredible. Attached are a few examples. As much as SC is unit based it also contains that unique look that even now continues to look realistic and scifi. Even as the units continue to to be detailed and redesigned the environment we see them in has become breathtaking in terms of look. Just wanted to point this out to people because we are caring about everything and I think this detail is one overlooked. Enjoy the selections below.
Yes, the scenery detail in SCII does look very good. It adds a lot to the atmosphere to the maps. Especially in the space platform maps, the scenery makes you think that there was some type of activity doing on before the battle started. Details such as the dropship on the repair bay and the spinning advertisements. The doodad I'm mostly fond of is the built in hanger which appears in the protoss demonstration video. It appears when there is an empty space (a gap with no land, just an abyss of space) in the platform. It is built to the side of the structure, and overlooks the empty space. It would be cool to see doodads you can interact with. I remeber in SCI, in the badlands tileset there was a doodad which appeared to be a store called "hoverworld". Apparently it sells hovercars. It would be cool if you could capture that store and start building mini hover cars who could serve as scouts as they can traverse land and water. here is the doodad I'm referring to.
Great art discussion thread. People talk about raising the graphical detail and physics engine to create eye candy. Doodads are what really make the SC battlefield ascetically pleasant. Well, aside from decapitated marines and zergling splatter. Funny how much time is spent discussing unit models while doodads go unsung. Good thing Blizz knows their art just as well as their balance so we can enjoy a little flavor and charm with our maps. Really strange that even in the Q&A batches about the map maker we here nothing about the doodads. Would be nice to know just how many are expected or to what extent they can be edited. Can we expect the return of booby trap doodads (installation)? Will we be able to scale and rotate models? Alter colors? Add effects? Can cliff side doodads (like what Lance posted) have restrictions on what height they can be placed? Any floating doodads (I would love to see ship debris and small meteorites hanging over a space platform)? Maybe even buried doodads that block movement of underground troops?
i totally concur, i love the new doodads, it really allows you to make civilized areas without military stuff, and i am sure to make cool maps with em, i am looking for a cool doodad pic right now
Doodads are an interesting topic. On the one hand, they're spectacular and liven up the game a lot while on the other hand they just hog resources from your system without even being noticed in competitive play. This will all boil down to league maps having very few while Blizzard default maps having lots. Personally I will enjoy them if I can run the game because I'm not a good player so I'd have plenty of time to marvel them :wubclub:
I'm fond of that big green crystal everyone was worried about. I forgot which screen shot it was in, but I remember someone saying it could be a new structure of some sort. However, it's just a doodad
As in Diablo 3 the doods in Starcraft 2 should be influenced by the game. It would be a very big work for the Blizzard team, but it is not an impossible job for them.
I think we havent talked about them because they are great! Nromally we only discuss the things we dont like I love the new doodads, and I think they have done a great job. The Diablo 3 doodads seems great too.
