So I'm gonna build a new computer at my parents' summer house and I can't decide if I should get the Nvidia 280 GTX or the AMD HD 4870. I'm kinda leaning toward the 4870 because it's a lot more cost efficient and it's about as good as the 280 GTX for half the price.

AMD = Best CPU Chips For Gaming, Not For Video
Intel = Best Chips For Video Editing

    ATi= Good Gaming Cards
nVidia = Good Gaming Card @ Low Prices.

A Rule of thumb, dont hire a plumber to fix your computer. Go with nVidia, its renowned for its graphic cards, AMD will probably suck

Hmm I have always looked at is as:
    ATI: Good Cards, low cost
Nvidia: Better cards, but more expensive.

Thats a really subjective thing Ace, for example I have always used ATI and never had problems either.

It's kinda weird because I've always used Nvidia too but the new cards are apparently awesometastic according to the reviews.

I'd say nVidia if you want THE BEST. They're like the Bose. AMD is like Koss or something. Great, but not AS GOOD

    Meow.

I have to say that for the less experienced user to go with Nvidia simply because the drivers are much more stable and they generally have an easier install.

I, for myself, prefer ATI because I am all about the budget pc. I am a more advanced user and can handle "less stable" drivers and work out problems better in both linux and windows enviroments. I've had my HD 2600 PRO card for a couple months now and its working perfect for my particular set up.

I still have an AGP motherboard, like I said "budget computer". It is pertty good. The IC7-G was, in its day, the best mobo in terms of modding and oc'ing.

Like i said before, you wouldnt pay a plumber to fix your computer. AMD is a major CPU maker, not a Video Card distributor. ATi is just as good.

Intel Makes there own integrated video, but how good they are vary.

I have next to zero experience with the two brands. I used to have an FX5200 before I got my 7300GT and I've had no problems with them. However, I had to watch my brother suffer with ATi not running certain games when all the other components more than met the recommended specs. So my senses would say nVidia but not being part of the herd also has its little magic. I think I'm going to go with AMD if I get a new system (for SC2...).

I'd say Nividia, they have the experience and do deliver effective graphics card, ati is like the new company thats cool, cheap, good as well, but nividia is just better and more stable of course

Eh, I think I'm gonna get the 280 GTX. And if I get the money that my mom owes me back I might SLi it so I don't have to upgrade for another five years. :p
