Somewhere I've heard that SC2 might burn graphics cards. Something about the fps when you are not playing but in a menu screen. Apparently it gets too hot. Does anybody know anything about that, is there reliable information on what can be done to prevent that?
yeap only with Nvidia cards... but there is a fix for that This is a general issue that Blizzard is aware of. This commonly happens on nVidia card setups running the 196 series drivers or newer. This occurs when the nVidia card doesn't cap the frame rate of StarCraft II and the video card overheats! The current work around is to… -Open your Variables.txt file (which can be found in C:\Users\{YourUserName}\Documents\StarCraft II) Add these lines to the bottom: frameratecap=60 frameratecapGlue=30 This problem was introduced during StarCraft II beta with the release of the 196 series nVidia drivers, while this issue was supposed to have been addressed by nVidia, many nVidia users are still experiancing the symptoms of overheating. Desktop users can try installing Rivatuner and manually controlling your fan settings to be at 100% while playing StarCraft II, in addition to the above variables.txt fix! Temperatures above 55C/131F may be too hot for your video card!
Many thanks! Does this solve it for good? On a German Apple forum someone claimed that this trick would only delay the problem and that the card would still overheat eventually.
*points at FAQ on main page* The other thing I recommend, besides the framerate cap that is talked about, is installing something like Rivatuner and maxing your fan to 100% while playing SC2/any other game. Now, if you are trying to do this on a Mac... well... I have no clue how to control the fan on a Mac (there has to be a way). If you find a way to control your fan on a Mac, please let me know and I'll add it to my FAQ!!!
TheXev, iStat gives you data on your mac (cpu usage, temperature etc): http://istat-menus.en.softonic.com/mac ...and smcFanControl allows you to manipulate the cooling: http://www.eidac.de/?p=134
